Description
The Legend of the Dogwood TreeOnce upon a time, the dogwood was as mighty as an oak.
Then one day the Roman authorities decided to use it for
the cross of Jesus.
Upon learning this, the tree was seized with sorrow. But
Jesus sensed the agony of the dogwood timbers over the
cruel duty they were forced to perform. Jesus said:
"Because of your sorrow over my suffering, you shall henceforth
grow slender, bent and twisted, so that your wood can never again
be used as a cross. You shall bear blossoms in the shape of a
cross, and on them shall appear a crown of thorns and nail prints
stained with red, so that all who see them will remember that I
carried you to Calvary."
(This was originally meant for the Easter season, but I was only able to get to it last night. This is my
submission for 's spring contest. Both Bushroot and a dogwood seemed quite
appropriate for the theme. I half-copied Bushy from a book (not traced!),
but it's mainly my own innovation.
Media used: Crayola markers, Le Plume II markers, pencil, white paint marker and Sakura pen on manila paper.
If you fave, please comment when possible.

Me too! I wonder what it was like to play Goofy? I
the characters---I've got several pictures of Clopin ( from "Hunchback" ) from my first couple of trips to Disney World. (I've got a few where he's sitting on my lap...
)
And if you hit the lottery, I'm up for it (and I'll make sure Dad is, too)! Or if I hit, we'll stop and visit you then take you to Scotland and Ireland!
(Maybe we'll all start our own pub!
)

Jim said it was a lot of fun
but it was a wee hot. They have fans installed in the costume, but either every hour or every half hour, you have to go to a man hole that takes you to the character underground where you can cool off.
When my friend Dave and I went to Walt Disney World in 1992, he took a picture of me with Darkwing but
I haven't seen Dave or that picture in years! Oh well!
That does sound like a dream!! We can start our own pub in Ireland or Scotland, or Burlington City, Vermont!

Yowzah!!! And we'll serve Irish coffee
with that wonderful whipped cream you told me about (I forgot the name of it
)!
Aw, too bad about the picture! I'd SO love to see that! Ah, well...we'll survive!
It's no surprise that those character 'greets' only last a few minutes, given Florida's humidity! But Dad and I always wondered if they had cooling systems inside those costumes. Clopin's might have been one
exception, but maybe those are hidden. Poor guy, having to wear tights in that Florida !

Yes, we'll serve
Irish
topped with that famous whipped cream from Cabot, Vermont!
Cabot makes great whipped cream and all kinds of cheeses as well
!!
I agree, if the character has to wear tights, they certainly can't hide any fans with tights. Florida has awful humidity, I can't go there in the summer, I would have a very hard time with my asthma!

I can imagine! That kind of weather is only good for the flowers. The last time I went in the summer I swore I'd NEVER go at that time again.
(I think I told you about that, I got one of the worst sunburns
and came home with something like malaria! )
As I recall, the guy's Clopin costume didn't have the tights really close to him, so they might have been specially made so he could have a little air-conditioning. Not that I was staring at his tights that much...
Does Cabot do mail order? From what you told me about their whipped cream, I can imagine how luscious their cheeses are!

Actually, for kicks and laughs I typed in my zip code for the store finder that sells Cabot Whipped Cream and the Pathmark in Edgewater Park sell it
I had no idea you could buy it in this area!! NO MORE REDDIWHIP for this Duck!!!!!!
It's Cabot from now on whether I am in Burlington, Vermont or Burlington, New Jersey!!!!!
Check to see if your local grocery store carries either their cheese or other products. Just type in your zip code!!

I did, and guess what??? Trader Joe's in the Southwest side of town carries Cabot cheeses! (I thought I had seen that name in there somewhere.
) I don't think they have the butter or cream,
darn it, but I'll check.
And Ben and Jerry's can be found anywhere. But it looks like you can shop online, so thanks for the linkage!

I remember ya telling me you had a real bad
sunburn
but
you didn't tell me that you were
sick
! That's awfull!!
The Cabot Whipped Cream, I know is only sold in the Vermont/New Hampshire Area, but I know in New Jersey, you can buy Cabot Cheeses in the local grocery store. It's located where they sell, Cracker Barrel, Kraft, Land-O-Lakes cheese.
Anyway, they do ship cheese on line and here is the website [link]
To view their other products liked Whipped Cream (they do have the best!
) [link]
I love Cabot products because not only am I supporting Vermont Diary Farmers, which to me is very important, but I know the products are made right there in Vermont and came from Vermont Cows just like Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream!! I always go to both the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory and the Cabot Sales Centre located on Vermont State Highway Route 100 in Waterbury, Vermont!
Enjoy!!
Clopin and his tights, eh? That's cute! I know your

Did I mention that he sat on my lap?
Funny thing, I never ate Ben & Jerry's ice cream (I've got nothing against it, just never got around to trying it). But I remember now that it's located in Vermont! There was an Everybody Loves Raymond episode where Ray and Debra went to a bed & breakfast in Vermont and they went to Ben & Jerry's (I'd like to get one of those hats)!
Anyway, thanks again for those links! ^__^
Yep, not only did I get broiled in that Florida , but I also got mosquito-bit (that'll teach me to carry bug repellent). A couple of days later I started getting stomach problems, but I figured that was partly from the food---I didn't exactly watch my diet while I was down there, and in summer your 'plumbing' can be extra touchy.
But about a week after I came home, I was getting flu-like symptoms (I had chills in the middle of August!).
Dad thought later that it might have been malaria. I wasn't bad enough to go to the hospital or anything, but it was no fun.
There are times when a Disney park is NOT The Happiest Place On Earth.

Yes, and I thought that was cute!
That's a shame you got sick after your Disney
trip. Did you get really sick at home or while you where still in Disney. Being sick
while you are on vacation is the absolute worst
. Nothing like being at home, when your feeling a wee under the weather
Especially since you go through all that planning, save all kinds of
only to go and get sick.
I know all about the 'plumbing' I guess you can say that is another thing I have in common with Darkwing Duck. We both have to watch, and of course as in Comic Book Capers, Gosalyn took full advantage of Darkwing's plumbing that sent him
to, well you know.
It's another part of the Darkwing Syndrome! Join the Club!!
Probably, a combination of the heat, humidity,
, dehydration,
and the bugs. Heat and humidity can really take its toll on your body!

Oy, yes. Poor Darkwing! Gosalyn really tortured him, didn't she?
Gee, no wonder we love DW so much, huh? He's one of 'us' !
Fortunately, the worst of the sickness was while I was home and could
relax. But I was feeling pretty cranky and miserable almost the whole trip
anyway, and the didn't help. Fortunately, most of the later trips made up for that!
Well, ah better shut down and go eat now. Have a great night!

Yes, Gosalyn knew the right things to say and do to Darkwing to get her way!

aww I really like the style the coloring is in, I can't explain it but I like it a lot.
You drew bushroot and the dogwood good, plants are so hard to draw! But you pulled it off well
again, very nice, they both look so content
Good luck, I hope this wins

mouselady In reply to GreatRuler [2005-05-28 17:58:45 +0000 UTC]
Thank ya, thank ya!
Plants are sometimes easier to draw than people, but that might depend on the type of plant and all. If you're making it realistic-looking, it can be a bear, but I was going for 'cartoony'.
As for Reggie, I had a bit of help from a book, but mostly to get his face. His body isn't hard to draw, especially his hands, which are so leafy-looking I don't have to worry about doing the fingers. (I have a MAJOR problem with hands! ) Of all the DW characters, he seems the easiest to do (except Liquidator, who's probably the easiest of all).
And btw, I DO like your 'Bobbys', I've just been too busy to get a good look. That one of him stalking is especially cool!

I have never heard of that legend somehow, Ethel, and it is so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for sharing. I think the incredible tenderness in Bushroot's face has added to the visual display of the legend, as his temperament matches the sweet sorrow of the plant that Christ so blessed. Beautiful.

That legend has always meant a lot to me. It was years ago that I first discovered it---at a NURSERY, of all places! They had a dogwood blooming there, with a little tag explaining The Legend of the Dogwood. And the flowers really did look like crosses, with the thorny 'crown' and the red spots as well.

Yep, they're more used to the deep South, I think, though this one we had came from Oregon, of all places. But Oregon weather and California weather are definitely worlds apart.
We have a losing streak with some types of plants, but our roses have done really great. Dad just planted several tomatoes and they do fine out here. We love fried green tomatoes, so we like to have plenty on hand.
(Btw, if you go to a British restaurant and see fried tomatoes on the menu, be careful. I ordered some at one years ago, and they were red tomatoes sprinkled with breading and fried until soggy... )
You've seen THAT movie, haven't you? Fried Green Tomatoes?

LOL! I was about to ask you if you'd seen that wonderful movie then you asked me at the end of your post! LOLOL! Yes, it's a wonderful heartbreaking movie. I still laugh sadistically at what happens to the wifebeating jerk. But yes lol the rest of the movie is incredible of course.
I'll watch those tomatoes....I wish I could eat at a REAL British restaurant IN Britain...ho well, Christy's always sending me lovely souvenirs so it helps ^^

LOL!!!! Well, at least Frank was finally good for something... "Best dang barbecue in the state-a Alabama!"
What makes movies like FRIED GREEN TOMATOES and YA-YA SISTERHOOD special to me is they're geared toward women my age. I call them my "coming-of-age" movies!
The closest I've come to a real British restaurant was the Rose 'n' Crown Pub at EPCOT; but it IS British food cooked and served by British people, so it's cool. Though I would so love to dine at Simpson's-on-the-Strand! ^_^
