Description
The Legend of the Dogwood TreeOnce upon a time, the dogwood was as mighty as an oak.
Then one day the Roman authorities decided to use it for
the cross of Jesus.
Upon learning this, the tree was seized with sorrow. But
Jesus sensed the agony of the dogwood timbers over the
cruel duty they were forced to perform. Jesus said:
"Because of your sorrow over my suffering, you shall henceforth
grow slender, bent and twisted, so that your wood can never again
be used as a cross. You shall bear blossoms in the shape of a
cross, and on them shall appear a crown of thorns and nail prints
stained with red, so that all who see them will remember that I
carried you to Calvary."
(This was originally meant for the Easter season, but I was only able to get to it last night. This is my
submission for 's spring contest. Both Bushroot and a dogwood seemed quite
appropriate for the theme. I half-copied Bushy from a book (not traced!),
but it's mainly my own innovation.
Media used: Crayola markers, Le Plume II markers, pencil, white paint marker and Sakura pen on manila paper.
If you fave, please comment when possible.

There were tears in MY eyes when I read your comment! ^_^ Thank you, luv---that really made my day!
Though the expression and symbolism were pretty much what I'd hoped to capture with Reggie, I've got to admit I was rather casual about it at the time...so I'm astonished (and pleased!) that the overall theme came out so strongly. If it can reach out to people as well, I'm grateful.

Thank you! I'd have liked to have used watercolors, but this was a rush job and I wanted to get it finished last night. Unfortunately, most of my Le Plume II pens had dried up, including the one with the very color of green I wanted for Reggie, so I had to keep wetting the tip to make it work.
But I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!

This picture is wonderful! I like the sketchy quality of the coloring. Coloring like that appeals to me... I can't find anything that needs to be brought to your attention, apart from this being a superb piece of art. Good job, Ethel! (By the way, I love your signature!

Thank you!
Manila paper seems to work well for art; you don't often need to put a background, except maybe a half-shaded one.
And glad you like my sig, thanks! I think that statement of Splatter's speaks for all of us here.

You're most welcome! Hmm, manila paper... It's a new one on me, but if it works that well, then I'm willing to give it a try! (But then again, it's probably YOUR skills that make it so great!
)

Awwww... Thank you, but you did Elizabeth far better than I could do!
My artwork's gotten so rusty over the years, since I've paid more
attention to writing. I'm wishing now I'd gone to art school years ago---they've got a really great one in Valencia, California Institute of the Arts; but their tuition's pretty high.
I'm slowly but surely learning to draw again, though.

Oh, and thanks for the fave! And yes, try that manila paper thing; it has that nice earthy tone to it.

Thank you much, doll! I love that sweet side of Reggie. He has his villainous moments, but acceptance and understanding is pretty much all he wants.
Of course, he DOES have that problem with people eating fruits and vegetables...
That's a funny quote, btw! I love those Letterman Top Tens, even though I sleep through that show most of the time.

Thank you! ^_^ I had rather limited materials at the moment; I couldn't find my colored pencils, and my favorite Le Plumes were dried up (I'm hoping to get more sometime---those babies don't exactly come cheap, though). Also, I wished I had made a seperate drawing of that, since I liked the pencil version a lot. But I think anything involving Reggie and/or plants just SCREAMS for color.
He is a darling, isn't he? He CAN be a loose cannon at times, but you can't hate him---he's just too dang CUTE!
