Where: Natura ARTIS Magistra Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The Margays can often be found curled up in front of the door to their indoors enclosure; seeing them awake is rare. Seeing them walking around, even more so.

But we caught both of them walking around, and I got in some uncomfortable (and prickly) positions to capture them on camera!

Species: Margay

Latin name: Leopardus Wiedii

Originates from the Americas.

Current status: Near Threatened

Did you know:

…The Margay looks very similar to an Ocelot – their head is shorter, the eyes larger, and the tails and legs longer. Most notably are their climbing skills, which has resulted in them sometimes being referred to as “Tree Ocelot”.

…They are one of few Cats who possess the ankle flexibility to climb down trees head-first.

…Until the 1990s, Margays were illegally hunted for the wildlife trade leading to a serious depletion of their population.

…Female Margays have only two teats, and give birth to one kitten per litter – very rarely, there are two. There’s a 50% mortality rate amongst kittens, and have difficulty breeding in captivity, making the prospect of increasing their population very troublesome.
