Bittersweet moments. By the time we finally got to sharing our first photos of young Joep, he had already died of a heat-stroke

This is one of our last decent photos of him; he grew up real fast and never sat in a place where we could photograph him well anymore. He was doing everything a baby animal should do - acting silly and a little crazy, rough-housing with his relatives and the other animals.

But nobody tells animals not to do those things during a heat-wave. He'd gotten himself so worked up in the heat, the zoo keepers never realizing the consequences of his hyper-active behavior during the heat of the day, until it was too late. His body couldn't take it, couldn't cool itself down anymore.

He passed away far too young.

Species: Brazilian or Lowland Tapir (Brazilaanse of Zuid-Amerikaanse Tapir)

Latin name: Tapirus Terrestris

Originates from South America.

Current status: Vulnerable
