Man, we thought the babies were cool, but this is just as amazing! A once-in-a-lifetime moment for us

Species: Axolotl

Latin name: Ambystoma Mexicanum

Originates from lakes underlying Mexico City.

Current status: Critically Endangered

Did you know:

…Axolotls are also known as Mexican Walking Fish, but it’s not a Fish – it’s a neotenic Salamander.

…They are best known for their looks; most Salamanders go through a metamorphosis before reaching adulthood but Axolotls stay in the aquatic, gilled phase the rest of their lives.

…Axolotls are struggling to survive, due to urbanization of their natural habitat and water pollution, the introduction of invasive species and being part of the Aztec diet and sold for food on the Mexican market.

…Axolotls are a very popular subject for scientific research and experiments due to several peculiar and uncommon traits.
