Description

When: December 1, 2018

Where: Diergaarde Blijdorp Rotterdam, The Netherlands

This Plantain-Eater was quite happy with the bit of food he found - and then had to protect it from all the other Turacos (making us very happy since they all got together ) who were quite eager to have it too!

Species: Western [Grey] Plantain-Eater (Grijze bananeneter)

Latin name: Crinifer Piscator/ Africanus

Originates from tropical west Africa.

Current status: Least Concern

Did you know:

...Plantain-Eaters are members of the Turaco family.

…They are common, noisy and conspicuous birds, being a lot less colorful than some of its relatives in the Turaco family – of whom some, such as the Violet Turaco are at times also called Plantain-Eater.

…It is very similar to the closely related Eastern Plantain-Eater, the latter having white tail bars, lacking the chest bars and dark wing feather shafts.

I’ve done this before. Throw a piece of something and the birds come swooping in. Still makes for fun moments.
Nice shot.

That is true

I normally only do it when I see young waterfowl struggling a bit; they're part of the zoo, but not in an official way, and they're often ignored. So if I happen to be eating something, I toss bits to the ground. I've only had a whole bunch of them swoop in a few times

Thanks
