Thank you very much I'm starting to draw more frequently on a larger scale - mostly portraits at the moment though. But the practice makes it all progress

Yes I noticed you've been uploading a lot of portraits of women lately mostly American suffragettes from the 19th century....what's behind that.....if I might be so curious?

It actually started on Facebook where I saw someone's post about Nellie Bly. I saved the photo but I forgot to write the name down. So I searched on Google for important women of the suffrage movement. She wasn't one of the faces in the list of the 50 most important women of the movement, but I read several stories that I found fascinating and decided to draw that great of women. I also meant to draw portraits of important women in the British suffrage movement, and I wrote down on pencil , different searches. After the original 50, and about two English women, I came across the name Nellie Bly in my handwriting - from one of the searches - and upon looking for images of that name...viola, I found the match to the photo which started the whole project. My idea being that even though there are available images for all those names, over 90% are only available in black and white, so I decided to draw crayons interpretations

That's very interesting Mozer and thanks for taking the trouble to let me know. I thought it might have something to do with the 100 anniversary of women winning the right to vote. You should check out Constance Markievicz (nee Gore-Booth) she was the first woman elected to the British parliament representing Sinn Fein for a Dublin constituency. Being an Irish revolutionary she was in an English prison at the time.

Thank you very much - that is an important name to add to my drawing list. Voting rights for women became law in the United States with what they call the 19th amendment of the Constitution. What really pushed me to start drawing the series was random talk that a woman would now be the face of a new $10.00 bill

A woman on a $10 bill....why not....but who would it be?
In Ireland before the Euro there was a woman on all the banknotes. Yes a real woman too not a fictional woman. And get this - she was an American woman.
So the story is she was an American heiress of Irish descent from Chicago. She married John Lavery a well established London based artist from Belfast. She and her husband had close connections to the new government in Ireland after independence so her husband John was asked to come up with a female personification of Ireland for the new states banknotes. Of course he chose his beautiful wife Hazel for his depiction of Cathleen Ni Houlihan a mythical person who personified Ireland in literature. So every Irishman would have had a picture of her in his wallet. Hazel died in 1935 but the notes with her image on them were in circulation from 1922 until the 1970's. Just google Old Irish banknotes to see her .
