Description
well, i guess since my drawing of the centaur is based, or rather, inspired by Frank Frazetta's Death Dealer, i kind of set this confrontation in a sort of Conan the Barbarian setting. not sure if that is too much mixing of different fantasies and stuff, but i just went with itanyway, its basically two illustrations; the Minotaur and the centaur. but i just happened to see the poses, and modified things slightly so that i could do one large (twice the size i've been usually working these days).
no ref, just imagined up, with Frazetta's paintings in mind, but not specifically

Thank you very much
I wanted to emulate the shield shown in Frank Frazetta's Death Dealer, but i didn't want to copy it or think of it too much - just a general, and similar idea

Thank you so much
There are several paintings that he did, but this image is the one that got me thinking about a centaur version: [link]

he has/had (retired now, i think) an amazing ability to draw and paint, in the sense that he didn't photograph reference for any of his figures and poses, and for the backgrounds he also just stylized his own versions of what he might have seen in magazines and books.
way too many fantasy artist take photographs of models, and more or less trace that onto a canvas

That is true, I prefer to paint from my mind instead too.
And it says that he died on the tenth of may (which is my brthday...lol) 2010. So yeah, retired in a way heh.

oops, completely missed that about his death (just looking at photos and not reading )
but, YES, your art looks flowing, active - with true motion. not stiff at all, like too much fantasy art i've seen

Yes, and an old joke as well - or at least, as my friend likes to say "you know illustrators cant read!"

Thanks!
i don't want to pick favorites, so i think i'll stay away from drawing battle damage...but i am thinking of doing battle scene close ups

thank you very much!
i am especially proud of this one, because it is completely imagined. and for the musculature, i used some fitness magazine ref, but the poses are straight from my thumbnail sketches.

Yeah looking at photos for muscles is always a good idea, soon you just learn how they work and where they should be

Tough foreshortening on the centaur's body, he looks a bit too chunky too me. Shading and details, though, up to your usual incredible standard--you are the bomb with line and shading.

i'm trying for the girth shown in Frazetta's Death Dealer's horse - can't seem to quite capture it...this also needs more attempts

Move the off foreleg and the upper torso back behind the near foreleg. That'll remove some of the blockiness of the centaur's front end. Thin out the forelegs. Your dedication to your craft is the route to mastery.

thank you for your input - i think the thumbnail/construction stage has to have more prep and effort...you're right
although, now, for some reason, i want to do these same characters, but palling around. With the Minotaur doing the chicken dance, and the centaur doing the Hokey-Pokey, you know "left hoof in, right hoof out..."
