Description So my job at the company I intern at is to pretty much draw up rough story boards or sketches of ideas for pilot animes, pre alpha video games, or concept for phone apps before it gets shipped to Korea to be finalized... who would have thought that Japan out sources their animation to Japan lol  so lets get into that...

I spent so much time to barely learn to count money and order food in Japanese only to be put in a group of ALL French and Americans  lol like wtf ...the art director for the company commission's is a French guy who did work on the Toonami show "Code Lyoko" and yes apparently even major productions companies has 3rd party companies request commissions for alpha phase products for them to pitch to producers bcuz you would waste so much money to have your AAA artist work on something before it has even been green lit it Cost nearly 100,000 to produce a single episode of an animation that producers pitch to the higher ups and once they determine that they can make there money back WITHIN 6 months from merchandise alone only then will they give the studio money to hire the big boys to take everything that the lead artist and interns have done and make a commercial product ..this is why only popular and mainstream manga get turned into actual anime and alot of great underground stuff gets overlooked

So recently My team was suppose to help  produce all of a Directors "alpha phase" cuts for Bandai and we had to have a 10 hour Lab with "Gunpla" to draw roughs for molds bcuz the figures take much longer to produce so they sometimes get pitched long before a "Gundam" show is even green lit and infact a mech series can be sold strictly on how cool the toys would look even if the story is shitty lol especially Gundam bcuz in Japan they take their Gundam model building veryyy very seriously so ive never done a Lab with industry ppl in the room they are very picky it was especially hard bcuz you have to draw the directors ideas as he pitches them to you or better yet to the group  translator who tells you the best way he can what he thinks the guy is trying to say... sigh Thankfully mech is my specialty so i carried the team on that note but when we got home we were all told to stream immediately to start doing more cuts  bcuz Gunpla needed to have something to show Bandai within 48 hrs that needed to be approved by our editor which meant 7 ppl only had 12-16 hrs to come up with a full story board for 2 diff versions for the pilot OVA of a series ... we had to stream bcuz thats the only way we could see references so that nothing gets leaked this was hard bcuz we had just come back from a 8 hr lab which thankfully didnt go the full 10 thanx to me and a co-worker who are really good at mech hes also american he also did concept for the transformers movie but yea we ended up coming thru for Gunpla bcuz they are (rumored) to be under staffed but still take big jobs for Bandai that they know they cant produce in time and just pay Art studios like mine to pick up the slack for next to nothing compared to what  what they've been paid we heard this is bcuz in japan there are now 2 gundam series running at once annually along with web series ... so we were all pretty burnt i dont like to do long periods of digital drawing bcuz your eyes start to burn but from what i hear this is common for animators

the next day we were told we had to do another 10 hour lab with the same fucking guy bcuz he needed to have technical drawings for the final alphas so that he could have them 3d rendered and than 3d printed luckily for me i did not have to do that lab bcuz i do not render... well atleast not on my resume lol that night the guys that had to go were told that they would be doing this every other day for the duration of the internship and they decided that it was too much work and actually quit including transformers guy smfh so now its just me, 3 French, and 2 new Korean guys that we literally talk to through text and Google translator lmao so yea the shit is getting real and i see why interns don't last long in this industry and no one cares bcuz there are a million students ready to replace you.... and the company still makes a huge profit bcuz they get some what decent work done for literally 15% of what it would normally cost ... but i understand im not her for the money im here for the sweet ass letters of recommendations you get per project from major names... those go sooooo far in America

Sounds like you're taking it all in stride.  Have you been put thru crunch times like that before?
