Description So you asked for it
Um; about 20 or so hours overall, colours done in Photoshop CS3.
Feel free to ask questions, I'll try to answer them.

Final piece is up here along with a couple of others.

NB this isn't a tutorial as such; i worked out a pretty solid method while working on these illustrations (I ended up producing more than 20 of them) but I've since changed my process a fair bit and always continue to experiment, but either way I hope it's helpful.
Enjoy!

Awesome, I knwo this sin't a tutorial but coudl you please expalin to me what 'overpainting' does?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to Herebellama [2010-01-19 17:04:56 +0000 UTC]

It's not really anything fancy, I just meant that even though I was painting the background second, because I was working behind the figure I didn't have to worry about being neat with my brushstrokes and painting over it.

Hey, man, in the step you start defining the ground, you first threw a texture and after you painted over it, right? or any other thing than this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to eduardovieira [2010-01-18 19:00:02 +0000 UTC]

Yep, that's pretty much it. I think this particular one I may've used two textures for but it's nothing too fancy either way.

awesome
so you DO paint the pictures like the TT minis. i knew it ^^

maybe i should try by myself oO

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to DavidCurser [2010-01-18 18:38:54 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure if it's me painting digitally like I do my miniatures or the other way around, though
(either way it works, so hey)

Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DavidCurser In reply to Mr--Jack [2010-01-18 22:58:50 +0000 UTC]

well i think that is the standard way to do the minis.

you have a great style. i will try that too.

tiGGlet In reply to ??? [2010-01-18 07:38:05 +0000 UTC]

I really enjoy your folder of images that show your works in the process. The last zoomed in clip in this piece really shows your detail- the detail looks fantastic! These warjacks must be fun to draw with the shiny metal and fire light sources

quick question, I've been browsing around and I notice people use the word render to mean different things on DA. In this case, when you way render, do you mean the process where you zoomed in and painted on lots of incredible detail? (as oppose to using some software algorithms/actions or something?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to tiGGlet [2010-01-18 07:48:55 +0000 UTC]

I guess I mean it in the painting equivalent of the 3D term; obviously I'm not getting the computer to do it for me so yes, it's painting in the highlights/details and materials (it's really just a fancy word for 'colouring' for the most part )

Thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tiGGlet In reply to Mr--Jack [2010-01-18 08:29:24 +0000 UTC]

thanks~ I bet my confusion comes from lack of 3D painting... maybe I will download and play with DAZ studio... aww fancy word

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to tiGGlet [2010-01-18 18:30:32 +0000 UTC]

Well the work I do doesn't involve any 3d at all (at least certainly not in illustrations like these); DAZ on the other hand is actual 3d where 'rendering' means outputting the image with proper lighting and all.
