Description So you asked for it
Um; about 20 or so hours overall, colours done in Photoshop CS3.
Feel free to ask questions, I'll try to answer them.

Final piece is up here along with a couple of others.

NB this isn't a tutorial as such; i worked out a pretty solid method while working on these illustrations (I ended up producing more than 20 of them) but I've since changed my process a fair bit and always continue to experiment, but either way I hope it's helpful.
Enjoy!

Thanks very much Mr Jack, yours are some of the most informative works in my watch list. Thanks for spending your time to enrich the rest of us mere mortals!

Is there a particular book these works are being released through? A rule book? An Art of Privateer Press etc? I would love to purchase it.

Thanks again for your continued awesomeness tis truly, awesome.

Mr--Jack In reply to NinjaCheese [2010-01-18 06:49:04 +0000 UTC]

haha Tis a pleasure!

The first bunch are in the core rulebook but there are going to be more in the first Cygnar Force book (think Warhammer codexes) that is going to be released in February (which will probably be cheaper, too).

Thanks!

That's ridiculous, man. I was just thinking how nice it would be to see the steps for that one. Thank you so much!

Do you ever go from rough lines straight to paint? Or do you ever do lines to grayscale? why/why not?

Thanks again!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to isso09 [2010-01-18 03:32:38 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, depending on the style I'm aiming for I'll quite often not go to such a highly polished level with my lineworkβ€”these two are more painterly and so I didn't worry about completely cleaning up before I started painting.
I don't really paint in greyscale that much these days, I think you get a bit more complexity if you work with colour right from the start, though I certainly have and it can be a good way to work.

No probs

Hypogeum [2010-01-18 03:06:26 +0000 UTC]

Nice!

I'm always curious on how people make their lines SO CLEAN. Especially on constructs and such, which require a lot of geometric shapes and, well, straight lines.

So did you take screenshots as you worked and were the highlights (glows) from the gunfire done on a separate layer?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to Hypogeum [2010-01-18 03:15:35 +0000 UTC]

These were all taken from separate layers; I was quite careful to keep everything apart while working on these so the final images were usually about 25-30 layers. The lines are not perfect, but the res that you work at makes quite a difference; it's easy in this sort of image too to just start painting over the lines (which I did in the first stage of rendering) to neaten things up as you go along.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hypogeum In reply to Mr--Jack [2010-01-18 03:48:31 +0000 UTC]

Wh- I don't even...

DΓ©jΓ  vu.

Well, I shouldn't be worrying about layer number for now. It looks like you only used around 5-10 here- it's very seamless, although I suppose the glow line over that one hinge in the final image should have tipped me off on my second question.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to Hypogeum [2010-01-18 03:58:04 +0000 UTC]

Well technically I didn't really need that many layers, I was just a bit paranoid at the time; the only thing that they really helped with was because I painted the background in last all the time it meant I didn't have to worry about being too neat there. I usually do things like glows and reflected light on a new layer just because it makes it easier to edit as you work.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hypogeum In reply to Mr--Jack [2010-01-18 04:04:23 +0000 UTC]

Layers were practically made for the paranoid. I still keep a bunch of old .sai files because I'm afraid I'll need to go back and edit them in the future. The exact scenario for that to happen would probably be so convoluted that it would also burn my house down in the process, so... hm. I'm off to trash some files.

Going to try breaking certain things into different layers on my next piece, see what helps and what doesn't. I tried it for glow, once, and it didn't turn out too well- beginner's effort.

Thanks for the Process really helps seeing how other people work! could you give more of a description of how you create the smoke and fire effects (mostly those coming out of its back) Amazing works man!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mr--Jack In reply to canadianxeno [2010-01-18 03:25:10 +0000 UTC]

They're mostly done with one of the brushes here ; it took me a long time to get used to painting them though, and especially with the flamey-glows it's very much also about the colours that you pick to get it looking right. The smudge tool comes in very handy as well but it can sometimes be a bit obvious that you've used it so that takes a bit of practise as well.

Cheers!

do you find it easier to work from clean lines on a piece like this or would it have been fine with the rough lines?
