I've found that in DH when the law doesn't suit you is EXACTLY the right time to start punching people.

One thing I noticed though - you tend to avoid the whole tube-in-yo-face-style respirator. Is it a coincidence or are gas masks really that much cooler?

The characters are designed by the individual players. I guess they prefer gasmask style detachable respirators.

That got me thinking... Why face-tubes in the first place? Wouldn't it be easier to stick a respirator directly into someone's windpipe by cutting into their neck, or even chest, rather than cramming their mouth with a ton of wires?
