Description Edit: Part II (How to Get a Literary Agent) is now up. [link]

I've never seen a writing tutorial on dA (or at least run into one....I'm sure there must be some out there), especially not one covering how to get one's writing published. Also, since I've been getting a ton of questions about this process, I thought the best way would be to make a tutorial. Pardon the randomness of this.......I know this probably doesn't apply to a LOT of people, as it only targets those who are interested in publishing a novel. Still, I hope it's helpful to some of you out there! This info is still kind of obscure to find, although there are a lot of books out now that talk specifically about how to get your novel into the hands of literary agents and publishers. You can find these books often in their own section at Barnes & Noble, or if you search online for them. Many published authors also have how-to sections on their websites dedicated to aspiring writers.

Again, random I know......... This is Part I of a series, although I don't know how many it'll take to get the info across. You could write a million pages about the process and still not finish. O__O I'm just covering the general information, the essentials that anyone would need to know when just starting out. If you're writing a novel and want to be published, I hope this helps! Thanks, and if you have any additional questions, please feel free to post them in my current journal. That way, other people with the same question can see the answer. Thanks again.

(Note: Just for anyone who is curious, I like writing fantasy stories. )

Wow. Obviously every writer should look into more research on how to get published, but what you've offered here is a great introduction into the subject. While I enjoy writing long pieces anyway, I never realized just how important the length was based on the type of novel being written.

Thank you for posting this tutorial. I plan to keep a copy of it, as I am interested in one day having a novel published [whichever story I am finally able to finish first. ]. I also plan on viewing your second tutorial and saving a copy of it as well.

Thanks again, and a job well done.

I've always loved writing though I tend to write more poetry due to the fact I have never been able to get enough good ideas for a novel. However I've been helping a friend edit and profread his in-progress novel and this is a real gem to me. I'm one of your new watchers and was going to bombard you with questions when I read in your journal that you have an agent, and your manuscript is heading towards possible publication. Luckily I found this and will pass this on instead of asking the usual beginer novelist questions.

Aw, thank you! Poetry writers are rare and precious to find, so congratulations to you on that endeavor. I admire good poets, as it's something I'm not entirely good at. I'm glad you found the information helpful! If you'd like to know more about literary agents, I have a Part II tutorial for that in my gallery as well.

Thanks you! poetry's always been special to me, I'm not that good at writing long stories. Each to our own I suppose. I did find part II, read, and then passed both onto my friend. Good luck with your novels, and I will keep watching you, if you don't mind.

I have read both pages of this series and find it to be a condensed, and valuable version of the books that I have read about writing for a living. It is very informative and will help me a lot. Though the main thing is that this comes after the book is completed, which is the hardest part for me to do. A friend and I have written 180 handwritten pages, yet this is nothing comapared to others. Once the book is completed, if it is good enough to become published, then this information is invaluable.

When I do finally finish a book that I am happy with, I will come and take a look at this again.

Just a tid bit of information. If you keep getting questions even after finishing this tutorial, lean people toward HollyLisle.com, she's an awesome author with a free book in .pdf format called Maiming the Muse, which covers a lot of the agent stuff and more on who's looking for what.

I love this tutorial however, I've never seen a tutorial pertaining to writing on DA before, so this is quite nice. Thank you.

TGS is not published yet; it *is* with a literary agent and is being considered by Random House and Bantam Spectra at the moment.

Thank you so much for this. It's not terribly exhaustive, but it's good to hear it from someone who is in the process. I spent two years in a creative writing program (I made the mistake of minoring in it for a while) and not once did we hear how to do any of this - just "you should be sending stuff out constantly!" with no practical how-to.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mree In reply to fainting-goat [2006-03-03 16:18:41 +0000 UTC]

You know, I've noticed that about the creative writing program at my university too.........it's all about writing craft (which is fine and good, too), but no one really knows about the publishing side. No one knows how to submit stuff! O_o It took me a long while to figure all of these steps out.....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fainting-goat In reply to mree [2006-03-03 18:13:39 +0000 UTC]

So you too then? Yeah, it's so annoying! I've had professors that have been published themselves and all they've ever mentioned of it is that it was hard and that we should be trying to as well. Got a question for ya. Read that you fancy fantasy over other genres somewhere in your DA account. Does your university have a bias against 'genre' fiction? I had one workshop that outright forbid fantasy and science fiction.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mree In reply to fainting-goat [2006-03-03 22:08:41 +0000 UTC]

OH yeah, they are COMPLETELY biased against genre fiction!! O___O I think they all consider it "lower-level" fiction for the masses or something, and that it's too easy to understand. I always hated that kind of thinking......
