Description Edit: Part II (How to Get a Literary Agent) is now up. [link]

I've never seen a writing tutorial on dA (or at least run into one....I'm sure there must be some out there), especially not one covering how to get one's writing published. Also, since I've been getting a ton of questions about this process, I thought the best way would be to make a tutorial. Pardon the randomness of this.......I know this probably doesn't apply to a LOT of people, as it only targets those who are interested in publishing a novel. Still, I hope it's helpful to some of you out there! This info is still kind of obscure to find, although there are a lot of books out now that talk specifically about how to get your novel into the hands of literary agents and publishers. You can find these books often in their own section at Barnes & Noble, or if you search online for them. Many published authors also have how-to sections on their websites dedicated to aspiring writers.

Again, random I know......... This is Part I of a series, although I don't know how many it'll take to get the info across. You could write a million pages about the process and still not finish. O__O I'm just covering the general information, the essentials that anyone would need to know when just starting out. If you're writing a novel and want to be published, I hope this helps! Thanks, and if you have any additional questions, please feel free to post them in my current journal. That way, other people with the same question can see the answer. Thanks again.

(Note: Just for anyone who is curious, I like writing fantasy stories. )

I've got three stories lined up to make, along with a comic book script which i will also sraw and stuff.. alas! hehe, one of the story, the fantasy one, i thought off when I was in elementary 5... and i still haven't done it o_O But I really want to get published. unfortunaltey living in the Philippines and being 16 years old don't help much, especially when I barely find the time to write because of my studies... But I'll keep trying, thanks so much for doing that tutorial, it's really great and I suspect there is now no need to tell you that it IS actually different from the tutorials one usually finds around here

It's wonderful of you to take the time to do this! It's extremely helpful so far, and I can't wait for the next installment. I've stopped to wonder about publishing myself, but I've never really gotten far nto it. I suppose it's best to know these things well before hand, despite any fears of never getting anywhere.

Good luck with your own writing, fellow fantasy writer!

HUZZAH! Thanks a bunch! ^_^ I'm already looking forward to part 2.

I'm working on my own Fantasy Novel. I doubt it, but I would love to have it published. I've been working on tons of different versions of it for years...my biggest problem is finishing a story. I always get the characters off on this great adventure...then don't know how to make the ending good . Another problem I have are descriptions of things ...at some parts I tend to go on...while during conversations I feel my text is empty...like the characters are just standing still while holding their conversation.

Well, I'll keep working at it. And see what advice your next part offers

Hey, cool.
*checks DA page for name*
Was that short fiction in a collection, or in scifi mags etc?

mree In reply to kargath64 [2006-03-01 01:50:34 +0000 UTC]

One was in Texas Magazine about 6 years ago, another was in an online fantasy e-magazine called Dark Pegasus, and I had an article printed in the Houston Chronicle. I've also been published before in Teen Ink, and won a Gold Award in Scholastic's 2002 national writing awards. It's not all that much, though.........I'm not a very good short story writer. They always turn out too long.....

kargath64 In reply to mree [2006-03-01 05:29:07 +0000 UTC]

I know the feeling. Just can't get something complete in something small

Take a look in my gallery at the PERFECT EDGE profile stories ... you can tell the chronological order by the length of the story because I kept making each one longer *heh*

Do magazines usually insist on sole publishing rights for the story?

I should get writing again. I did do a MASSIVE effort on a script for a game, but that turned out to be given to one girl only as a birthday present. Hmm...

God thank you. My best friend and I are both writers and admire tyrotinge's art as well. I enjoy fantasy as well but I can never come up with a good enough plot and story line to finish an entire book. My friend writes more on the manga/anime style but she's an amazing writer. I'll let her know about this.

Can't wait for Part II!

Good luck with your books. I've read a little and they're so interesting, I'd buy!

Very original idea, to write this.
I adore the drawing with it too, btw. It matches perfectly.

Fortunately, both my parents are publishers, so I've got connections *grin*
I don't need to worry about getting published

I'll definately tell my friends about this tutorial though, when they ask.

heh, I sdtarted out with poetry, moved on to short fics/biography-inspired, then got internet and discovered the wonderful worls of fanfiction... what fandoms were you part of?

coooool, actually got published.... the closest thing I have to getting published is putting it up here on DA, fanfiction.net and fictionpress.com... it's nice, getting reactions, knowing your stuff is read ^^

High, five, fantasy writer.

I talked a lot to experienced people about this, and they never gave me a clear answer. So it kinda surprises me that you manage to make this look so "right onward to the steps of getting published". (instead of small details you just might have to deal with, but itsn't really a problem until they appear, IF they appear.)

Awesome!! *hug* can't wait for next step.
