Description
(Drawing: 9/2018; graphite; 28 x 43 cm)Length: 7 m/ Weight: 400 kg./ Age: Early Jurassic, Sinemurian (193 mya)
(Info. Source: The Princeton Field Guide to Dinosaurs, 2nd Edition, by G.S. Paul)
Made infamous by the Jurassic Park films, Dilophosaurus was one of the largest predators of its time. The crests on top of the genus's head most likely had a display function. Males' crests may have been brightly colored and larger compared to females' crests, if females had crests at all.
Art Notes:
While debatable, the ichnotaxon Grallator minisculus possibly has feather impressions and has been to attributed to Dilophosaurus, or closely related animal. This means it possible that Dilophosaurus and its kin may have sported a fuzzy coat of protofeathers. So, I reconstructed Dilophosaurus to reflect this possibility.
