Description Contamination Europe

Image Description
This is the cover artwork for the classic post-apocalyptic role playing game “Contamination Europe”, I’ve developed.
It was the first piece of concept art I created for Contamination Europe. It should represent the whole feeling of the game at first view. The enviroment is covered with reddish-brown dust and ash. Thick, radiated clouds cover the sky. The sun only spends a diffuse glow on the scenery. The radiation in the air nearly can be seen.

On the picture you can see the remnants of destroyed Berlin. In the background is the town’s landmark – the Brandenburg Gate.
A scattered Panzer-League soldier, equipped with a Panzer-Suit II and a modified 8,8 cm Flak-Gun roams the ruins of the city, to get back to his comrades. The city is a deadly place, because it’s the home of the Plague Mutants.

Brief Background Summary
2.065 a worldwide nuclear war destroyed human civilization and killed nearly everyone and everything on Earth. Only a few survived the war and formed some new factions/organizations or communities in the remnants of destroyed cities. As time passed, new species are created due to the radiation.
89 years later the world is still a rotting graveyard, where the few survivors fight to see the next day.

Contamination Europe plays in 2.154, in post-apocalyptic Germany. Before the nuclear war, a yearlong bloody trench warfare with the russian army for the last coal deposits takes place in eastern Germany. Because of the general shortage of raw materials, hardly no motorized units could be deployed. Whole armies of tanks and airplanes were useless, so the war was an infantry war, similar to the first world war.
Some day the russian army used biological and chemical weapons to break up frontlines, but this attempt failes. The use of B and C weapons continues for some years and even after the nuclear war, wide areas are still contaminated with deadly viruses and chemical gases. This regions are know known as the “Toxic Fields”

In the years after the bombs, several new factions like the Wasteland Tribes, the Bandit Clans, the Trade-Union or the Panzer-League and others had arisen from the nuclear ashes and pursued their goals.

The players are wasteland dwellers, who explore the deadly wasteland for equipment or food. They earn or loose reputation by the different factions depending on their decisions. They may play the good or bad way, that means help or steal/kill others.
Players can find or buy their own base and equip it with various upgrades like water filter, furniture, power plants or automated guns, minefields or a howitzer.

Design Thoughts
I want to point out, that I don’t wanted to make a Fallout clone. Well I know, every new post-apocalyptic RPG is compared to Fallout, but that’s a little unfair, because Fallout has not the claim to be the one and only post-apocalyptic RPG. Besides, there are some important differences:

-Contamination Europe (Con Eur) focuses on Europe, not the USA (perhaps in later Sourcebooks, who knows)
-Con Eur doesn’t play in an alternate reality like Fallout does. It’s based on a fictional continuation of our history.
-In Con Eur there’s no 50s style art deco at every turn
-Con Eur should be really depressing, in style, artwork and most important: feeling of the game
-Con Eur is much more realistic, so you won’t find super-duper-mega-high-tech-big-fucking-guns every 5 meters. Its really hard to get good equipment, because this stuff isn’t produced since 90 years. You have to count every round. And you can’t eat food that has rested the last 90 years in a refrigerator without power.
In general: All that’s pre-war is hard to find and very valuable.
-And you only can carry a limited amount of weapons with you, depending on your strength and the size of a weapon. So don’t expect to carry the armory of a whole army with you.

Look / Feeling
It was especially important for me to create a dirty, rusty, rotten look and feeling for Con Eur. I think this is most important for a believable post-apocalyptic scenario.
So every concept artwork was created with these thoughts in mind.

Why the hell is he able to carry an AA gun?! Good picture, but I don't understand why he uses that.

"every new post-apocalyptic RPG is compared to Fallout"

Yeah, that is what you'll hear from the young players. Back in the '80s and '90s, it was Mad Max. But with gaming veterans like myself, it would be classic Gamma World (although, it a weird contrast, as Mad Max and Fallout are both gritty, with lots of modern element, while GW plays out like an old comic book on all levels).
