I read a Cthulhu Mythos tale where the Zarrians try -in vain- to find one reason why Earth should be left in the control of humans. After 3 world wars and the start of a 4th, they decide that it's hopeless and, rather than wait for World War IV to finish, hand earth over to the Yuggoth beings !
