Description
Layered, laser cut, plywood illustration, the approximate size is 240mm by 395mm and 30mm deep. The Separation depicts a story that was divinated using the I-Ching, a technique inspired by the Philip K Dick classic, Man on High Castle.
The I-Ching, or Book of Changes, is an ancient Chinese text that allows the reader to search for answers by throwing coins (traditionally they used yarrow stalks). It's not really like fortune telling, horoscopes or anything like that, it's more like a technique of searching your own subconscious for answers using random numbers generated by throwing coins. I'm not a spiritual person myself but I found it to be a really interesting and novel way of making work. It's amazing how freeing it feels to leave the central themes/ideas behind a piece to chance. This was certainly one of my most interesting commissions to date.

I have to admit that I let this piece sit in my message center for a few days because the thumbnail was kind of overwhelming, but now that I have some time free, I'm glad I took the time to look over this piece. Very interesting and beautifully composed - you always put the colors and layers to such good use in every piece. Thank you for sharing!
