Late Winter, Year 750 of the New Age

Windborne, Near Barron River

The soft patter of rain echoed through the dark valley, with just enough moonlight filtering through the thin rainclouds to light the lands below in a ghostly light. The season had been uncommonly wet – which was a welcomed occurrence. For the price of mildly annoying non-stop drizzle, the heartlands of Windborne had transformed from a landscape of leathery, yellowed prairie to a bed of bright green sweetgrass.

Practically invisible in the wraithlike mists, the dark roan stag was identifiable only by his bright golden mane and tail-tuft. A mischievous smile played across his lips, and brightened his handsome face as he prowled through the early-morning darkness. He moved silently, the fall of his hooves cushioned by the damp grass, and ever careful of his newly grown rack – a princely spire, the second season he’d grown one.

His prey shifted ahead of him, the occasional giggle making her easy to follow. She flicked her tail coyly behind her, as though she were conveniently unaware of the fact that it spread the delirious perfume that accompanied does during the rut. The stag growled playfully from a few paces back, which elicited another enchanting giggle from the dappled grey doe before she broke into a bouncy, frolicking run.

With excess energy crying out to be burned, the roan stag bounded after her with a laugh. He caught up to her within a few moments, and nipped gently at her shoulder when he fell even with her. “Little rabbit,” he purred between strides, “Do you think you could escape me so easily?”

His dappled doe grinned easily, veering off and darting smoothly in a new direction. “Be mindful of this rabbit’s warren.” She chimed melodically from over her shoulder. Despite her warning, her eyes dared him to chase her down. She wanted to be caught by this predator.

Fox overlooked the threat of the doe’s splinter herd, and pivoted to follow her. She was running full-out now, and the stag had to hustle to catch up with her. To the east, the sun had finally broken through the clouds, banishing the drizzle and illuminating the morning mist with golden light. Fox and the dappled doe were no longer concealed by the darkness, and their rendezvous would be discovered if it went on much longer.

The stag grazed his teeth tenderly across the doe’s hip when he’d muscled within reach, which elicited another soft giggle as the pair slowed to a stop. The dapple doe turned to the stag and they stood closely in silence for a moment, wreathed in the delicate morning mists.

“So,” the grey doe whispered bewitchingly, “What does the fox do with the rabbit once it’s been caught?”
