Description One thing I get asked is 'how do you get those textures on an iPad'? well this is how, nothing hard or complicated its just using the tools at your disposal.

I'd probably download the full size if I were you

Question 1: How much time did you invest for this sketch in total?
Question 2: I see that your shadowing especially at the bottom of the rocky pillar has a liquid feeling (very reflective), did you do this purposefully or is it a part of the technique used?
Question 3: The colors that you use are cool blues, a medium violet and a warmer brown-red towards the light. Would you consider taking the chance to use greener colors or yellow ones with rocks? If those rocks were not inside a cave would this matter to you regarding color picking?

Hi pgeorgiou, thanks for viewing the tut and for raising some questions.
This particular piece is really old now and so I will try my best at answering your questions.

1) Total time back then varied but for something like that piece around the 2 to 4 hour mark, maybe over a single sitting or more often over a couple of days. The backdrop of this piece went into another work which was worked a little more: mull-art.deviantart.com/art/iP…
2) I'd have to say it was unintentional, it wasn't until you raised that a question had I ever been made aware of that (I still actually don't see it myself).
3) I would certainly take the risk at including other color ranges and not just playing safe, for this demo my main emphasis was on the technique as oppose a more in depth tutorial.

It was really hard answering your questions as my thought process for this piece are long forgotten, I hadn't actually viewed this, or other iPad work in years
I hope I answered your questions (in a roundabout kinda way?)

Thank you for your time answering my questions, I didn't mean to cause you trouble . Well I got really enthusiastic by the result of your work and I can say that the rocky environment is one of my weak spots, thus so many questions came up. I am recently studying some books with rocky sketches and I try to figure out similarities in other peoples works also, to apply a certain procedure but I still haven't got the grasp of it. Using my own technique I still need a lot of work to become perfect. I believe that is a matter of volume control in general with correct shadow/light application. Even a chaotic shape with correct application of light and dark should be able to appear like a rock a rock of some kind.

JanticsAntics [2013-07-07 01:27:14 +0000 UTC]

I was wondering, since I'm still a bit new to this, is there any way to have a transparent background as the base you start with? I've seen the transparent drawing button but I'm afraid I don't know what it does.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mull-Art In reply to JanticsAntics [2013-07-17 17:28:18 +0000 UTC]

The transparency button actually locks the contents of that layer so you can recolour or paint over just those contents and not the entire layer.

For example, if you painted a blue ball but decided you wanted it green, without the need for erasing and redrawing you can hit the transparency button and then simply paint over the ball without the new paint affecting the other parts of the layer.

I don't believe at this time there's the facility to have the lowest layer (the background one) as a transparent layer.

how do you save a color on the sketchbook? i just uploaded it and already forgot from the tutorial (:

Mull-Art In reply to jellogorrell2019 [2013-03-24 21:32:06 +0000 UTC]

To save a custom colour in SBP for iPad, press and hold one of the colour tiles along the right side of the screen (shown after you've pressed the tool puck), after a few short seconds the colour wheel is present and you can then select your colour and it will be saved in that tile.
Hope that answers your question and happy painting

Oh my gods, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I've been looking forever for someone who could show me the ropes around SBP for more professional-looking drawings. :3 I've been using it for sometime, and though I could stumble on my way around, I really needed some advice on using the tools for in their best. Kill3rR4bbit [2013-02-01 16:34:46 +0000 UTC]

Here's one that has me stumped....If I have a multiply layer that I need to merge down onto a normal layer while retaining the way it looks..whats the best way to accomplish that? Example: If I have a black circle on a white background and I have it set to multiply to leave only the black circle visible and I want to merge it onto a normal layer with an image...if I merge down the white around the black circle will be visible again....(not sure if I made sense there lol)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mull-Art In reply to Kill3rR4bbit [2013-02-02 15:19:54 +0000 UTC]

Merging a multiply layer down onto a normal layer will retain its appearance and take on the properties of the lower merging layer. The white areas of a multiple layer wouldnt become visible when merged down (providing its merging with a normal layer).
The only issue you have when merging is when the layer below is anything other than a normal or the same as the merging layer (both layers have the same properties). I've found that sometimes the effect is reduced after a merge and in those cases I've created a new blank layer between them, merge the multiply down onto the blank so it becomes a normal layer, then I can adjust as required before the final merge (if I have spare layers).

Hope that kinda answers your question lol?

Kill3rR4bbit In reply to Mull-Art [2013-02-04 18:21:24 +0000 UTC]

hmm..i'm not sure what I'm missing then. I have a multiply layer with a black and white stamp. I change it to a multiple so the white becomes transparent (its my signature) Now if I save the image as a jpeg without merging it the white stays transparent. But if I merge that layer in any way the white becomes opaque again. I've tried merging it to a blank normal layer and I get the same results :/

Mull-Art In reply to Kill3rR4bbit [2013-02-04 19:09:09 +0000 UTC]

Thats unusual, I've just tested a similar piece based on your description and found once the layers were merged, the white wasnt visible so I'm really stumped as to whats occurring mate.
I'll keep having a play to see if I can replicate your issue

Hey, this is super helpful, but I do have 2 questions.
1. What exactly is the smudging tool? Cause I can't find it...
2. How do you combine layers?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Mull-Art In reply to the-Mask-Maker-O-o [2012-12-13 13:32:55 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much
The smudge tool: [link] its the highlighted brush.
And to combine the layers (merge) highlight the layer you want to merge down, press the downward arrow icon and the option to merge/cancel is presented. The lower layer is the dominant one so if you have it set to anything other than normal that merged layer takes on those layer properties (add, screen, multiply).

I hope that helps, if not get back in touch and I'll try and explain it further

I'm hoping this isn't a dumb question, I can't find an answer. On my iPhone in Sketchbook mobile I have the different font styles right there and colors are one click away. On my IPad with SBP, I see no font choices. The default letters, or at least the ones I'm stuck on suck. SBP is great phone and pad. I hope I'm overlooking the solution.

Mull-Art In reply to uptopuptop [2012-12-03 15:50:03 +0000 UTC]

Hi there, nothing is a dumb question.
Are you using the Express version or full, paid version? The answer below is only based on the full version as I dont know what features are included/excluded with the Express version.
The font options are located under the 'font' button, when you first select the lettering option (the capitalised A) the keyboard, input area, font selection, colour, font size and opacity are presented. When you select the 'font' icon you should be presented with the list of fonts available, if you require a screenshot let me know and I'll upload one for you.
I hope this helps.

Thanks, I hope it comes in handy, I have a few more tutorials on the SketchBook Pro News site (can be found using the 'i' button from the menu bar in the app). There are also a few more tutorials from other artists too.
I'm currently producing an interactive tutorial which I hope to have completed and released sometime next week
If you have any questions concerning the tutorial or SBP then let me know and I'll try and assist.

Mull-Art In reply to BullofColchis [2012-08-18 16:41:53 +0000 UTC]

Do you mean directly from the iPad and SketchBook Pro? If you do sadly that option isn't available, you will need to save the image onto your desktop/laptop (either directly via the devices photo gallery or email, dropbox etc), then use DeviantArts own 'submit' function. I hope that answers your question, if not please respond and I will try and help further.

you can adjust the size and opacity using the central hub (that circular tool in the centre of the screen when you press the small tool button) and if you want to change the brush settings bring up the brushes and hit the slider button.
Hope that makes sense and is clear? if not let me know and I'll try and explain with more details.
