Description
Just to make it clear, this is in no way complaining that I don't get enough comments and messages on these sites (I get far too many). It's about how easily I can waste huge, sweeping chunks of my day checking my regular cycle of links and how pitifully egocentric it is.

And of course I found this while checking dA for the 4-5th time today. I love the little website segments you drew, you managed to make boring things like URL bars adorable.

Thanks! I'd probably enjoy the internet even more if everything was rendered in wobbly ink lines.

What's made it worse is social networking sites are basically the best place to send out invites to meet with people in real life. I'll be sitting around killing time online, waiting for someone to come up with a party or event somewhere, so I can interact with humans face to face. I'd set up events myself but I'm far too lazy.

To be fair, that's probably a far more respectable use of the internet. Unfortunately the majority of correspondence does not lead to any kind of real activity.

I'd have to agree for sure. The interaction is nice, but it's not always practical and certainly rarely productive.
I've read up on it a bit and it seems most people who spend too much time online are very prone to becoming depressed. It makes sense though. As someone who has worked a couple of jobs where you have to sit for 8 hours straight, 5 days a week, with breaks so short you can't possibly get enough exercise in, I can say the lack of activity absolutely wears on a person. Personally, I haven't found myself becoming more productive, but limiting my time online has definitely improved a lot of areas in my life. Wish more people would do it for the sake of their own happiness. And, y'know, getting rid of that beer gut.

I'm definitely trying to cut back (evidenced by the fact that it's taken nearly a month to reply to this) or at least plan my time more efficiently. Unfortunately since I spend so much time working in photoshop the temptations always there and I end up spending just as much time aimlessly browsing shit I don't care about while endlessly denying myself the stuff I actually want to look at. It's a very poor system!

Have you considered maybe unplugging the Ethernet cord when you work? It's a stretch, since you have to go through the trouble of taking an extra step (and yes, it's a small one, but those tend to be the more difficult ones to make), but it might prevent you from going online when you need to focus.

this is amazingly well laid-out man, great execution. It's also very true, I had to make some serious cut backs on the amount of crap I do online this year. I even stopped reading some webcomics I have been following for awhile. It's odd to feel sad that your life is more then just internet junkage. hmmm.

Yeah I read quite a few. The good thing about webcomics though is that at most, you know there's only gonna be one update per comic a day, so you can read them and leave them without too much checking.

The worst thing is to check if you still haven't got any new messages. Check? Nope. Check? Still nothing. Check? I guess I won't get any comment. Check? How about now? Check? And now? Check? Alright, last call. Check? Ok, this one is the last. Check? Last one didn't count. Check...

So? That's it? No more pageviews? Alright, I'll check again from time to time.
Like right now.
Still nothing.

Haha, thank you. To be honest there's almost always something in my inbox. It's more to get across the fact that I'll sometimes check something and then literally 5 minutes later, just automatically check it again KNOWING that nothing has changed. It's preposterous. How I ever get anything done is beyond me.
