Description
You're probably wondering what the hell a "spring-heel" is. The Spring-Heeled Jack was a spooky guy in London that slashed people up with his claws and jumped really high. I always thought he was a legendary take on Jack the Ripper, but it turns out this myth predates ol' Rippy by 60 years!Anyway, that was another one of the Monster In My Pocket characters.

I feel somewhat proud that I knew what a spring-heel was before finding this.

He may have been the Marquise of Waterford, an insane nobleman. Spring Heeled Jack was, for many years, the most wanted man in England.

I always thought the Spring Heeled Jack myth was tied to Jack the Ripper, until I found out ol' Springy predated Jack by about 60 years. The moral of the story: don't trust anyone in England named Jack.

Yeah, you're right--I looked it up and the myth preceded Jack by about 60 years. What are the odds? They're so similar! Chances are the papers named the killer "Jack" in reference to the Spring Heel myth.

i dont think it had anything to do with jack the ripper, it was a sighting of a mad man leaping at inhuman heights and tormenting people. awesome though. =] like the claws!

Yeah, I always thought it did, but then I read that the Spring-Heel myth predated The Ripper by 60 years! If anything, it probably influenced what people thought of Jack the Ripper.

Oh, I had a book about him when I was younger! I think he also supposedly left flaming footprints behind wherever he stepped but his claws were said to be cold as death and he was known to laugh wildly as he would leap away from the authorities.

Cool! I always thought he was created as monster folklore for Jack the Ripper, but I guess the legend originated about 60 years before all that mess. Maybe it was the legend that prompted the newspapers to call him "Jack" the Ripper!

Interesting that they'd make a toy based on a serial killer. Or based on a monster which was based on a serial killer, at least.

I didn't know they created Spring H. Jack based on Jack the Ripper, I though they where two different crazy dudes.

As far as I know he was--he was set in Victorian England, he slashed his victimes up, and one night he mysteriously jumped into the fog, never to be seen again. Sounds like wacky ol' Jack to me! Of course, that's just the description Monster In My Pocket gave me--I haven't looked up any other folklore on Spring-Heeled Jack, though I suppose I should!
