Description
Wheatley and Chell belong to Valve. Altley is mine.I should be working on the next chapter, but this image has been knocking around my skull for the past two chapters, so I finally caved and drew it out.
This was my first time drawing this type of lighting. I think I got the point across. Not too keen on the perspective, but I'm showing improvement. And I can't decide if Altley's head is too big or not. Bleh.
I still love this, though. It's just a tiny bit spoilery for C&L, as it's set in the sequel, but the fact that I'm planning a sequel in the first place is just as spoilery. So fuck it.
I like the idea that he's made it to safety and gotten all of his injuries cared for. They gave him a cup of tea and left him to relax. Because letting yourself get distracted in Aperture Science would wind up getting you killed, Altley's had to suppress and ignore a lot of things over the past week. Now he has a chance to work his way through everything, and he's been at it so long that his tea is now forgotten and cold.
Because let's face it, I've put him through a LOT of shit so far in C&L. This image is a little heartbreaking for me.
(You win exactly zero internets for guessing who's peeking in on dear Altley.)

This image strikes me for many reasons.
It makes me so happy that he's able to get to the surface (the one-over he pulled on GLaDOS was stunning and totally above what I expected of a Wheatley. But that's part of what I love about your realistic interpretation of him. He's not just the idiot everyone thinks he is.) I'm glad that he meets Chell and doesn't die on her doorstep.
And I think that's part of what I love about him. He's not desperately optimistic. He doesn't have the insane doublethink self esteem issues (pretending he's the best and knowing he's rotten) of most Wheatlies. What he does have is biting sarcasm, desperation, bitterness, and a strong desire to not act like coreWheatley. He's also in pain and constantly on the run, so you don't really have much room for all that.
I love the subject matter, the bandaging of his many injuries. Having had a nasty knee injury similar to his (think skiing at 30 mph into a rock to avoid a little kid) while that wouldn't be the most comfortable position is certainly wouldn't be agonizing like other people suggest. The support of that other foot under the leg would help (although as I remember his right ankle was messed up), and the elbows are far enough above the kneecap to not put a lot of pressure on it.
I love the detail that you put into his body. The body language is proportional and well structured, and the shading is excellent. Where did you learn to draw people? The curve of his nose, the line of his jaw and neck, the musculature of his arms and chest, it's all so well done. His legs and hips remind me so much of all the time I spent in a knee brace (and still do sometimes), and you got the hair down right. Your shading is nicely done, especially on the hair and face.
But what I love the most is the eyes. The eyes that are seeing far much more than the cold cup of tea held like a talisman. He has gone through so much pain and horror to escape, and yet in some small way I believe that he will always be trapped there in some part of his mind. Those eyes and the vague set of the mouth make me incredibly sad. He's lost everyone he's ever known without saying goodbye (especially to his parents and ChellDOS), and in some cases seen the people he respected in horrific ways. He's been tortured, beaten, and the heart of a massive manhunt. Everything he has worked for has either painfully not worked out or betrayed him in some way (I kinda expected it with Craig- and your Craig is a lot harder to understand than others I've met- but ChellDOS came as a surprise). To top that all off, he saw his own water decayed corpse and was forced to realize what his respected and liked coworkers had in mind for him. He's watched a man be brutally murdered by a psychopath with a fixation on him, and had the snot kicked out of him by her. He killed her, and even in self defense that weighs on the mind. He destroyed the one way that his only proclaimed friend could come back to life. And most importantly, he came so close to becoming like coreWheatley.
The tea part really sells it for me. I share the belief with the British that tea will help with most ailments, or at the very least make you feel better. Cold tea shows me just how far gone he is at the moment.
I think he'd actually be more shell shocked than Blue Sky Chell, given that he's had TWO psychopaths trying to kill him, and the messy means of dispatching one. Furthermore, he still has a memory of what he's lost. I wonder how his mother will take hearing that the place he works at turned into a crater 150mi wide. In any case, I have to wonder what it's like from Chell's perspective, seeing this not-Wheatley and how bloody messed up he is. I wonder if she pities him.
And that brings me to this point: are you still considering a sequel? Because with whatever the heck is going on at the Aurora (I imagine it's karmic explosions at Black Mesa), I would love to see it. I'd love to see Wheatley trying to adjust to a new world (Hell, I'd kill just to see the internal dialogue going through his head in this picture). Is this world in any way similar to Blue Sky's post apocalyptic world? I saw a lot of Chelley shipping, and I'd like to know how Chell and he go from her almost shooting him on her doorstep to an actual relationship. I love this Wheatley, and I'd love to see more of it. If you're not going to continue this... would you tell me what happens? I'd love to know that much at least.
Apologies for the long winded comment, but I wanted to make an attempt at putting to words exactly what I love about your story/art. I've probably missed a lot of things (I can probably edit the comment later or something), but I hope you enjoy the somewhat disjointed and extended review. You earned it.

Poor baby, omg. I can't even imagine what it must be like to finally have some time to think about...everything that he hasn't had time to think about yet that's happened. That's a LOT to process, a lot of trauma to deal with all at once, this is actually making me really emotional, lol. At least Chell is there, she understands. You did a lovely job with Altley's body, I especially love his legs, his hands, and his expression, particularly his expression. I also like Chell's silhouette in the doorway there. Great job!

You know, ever since I first saw this pic (which was when I started bombing you with comments on the fic itself), something's seemed slightly off to me about this, and I've been trying to puzzle it out ever since then.
After being sick this whole week and therefore spending far too much time on the ol' computer analyzing fanart for something to do (I'm that desperately bored already), I finally (after five minutes straight staring) got it.
Altley appears to be resting quite a bit of weight on the knee brace for his injured leg, which I know from past experience in injuring my leg and loving tea is a quick way to a large amount of pain.
Of course, this means I'll just dump this here and fave the pic because I love absolutely everything else about it.
Injury consistency is love.

I can't lie, I don't remember what I was thinking when I drew it that way. It was probably done out of a combination of having difficulty deciding where the arm was placed, not being very good at perspective/depth, and ignorance (I've never injured my knee before, so I don't know how much it hurts or what you can get away with).
Thank you for pointing that out!

It's okay, and it actually happened to me quite a lot because I did it out of habit, which could be why Altley's doing it here. Anyway, I can't really criticise, because you can actually draw not only humans, hands, and dynamic posing, but all three at the same time.

Hahahaha, it's more by accident than design -- sometimes I just magically draw something that doesn't look like ass, and I can't explain how.
And just because you may not be able to draw something doesn't mean you can't see it. I've spotting things that I couldn't draw to save my life, but still looks odd. Anyone who tells you that just because you can't do what they can means you can't critique them is a blithering idiot and doesn't deserve your attention.

Well, kinda what I more meant was that I don't really know the limits of the medium, per se, but I know what you mean.

Aaaah, I remember being grounded all too well... that's how I spent 75% of my high school career.
Memories...

Thank you very much! I'm glad it translated well -- I wasn't sure if I could pull off "internalized drama" without any dialogue. Thank you!

Ooooooh!!! I LOVE the look on his face! i can practically see gears turning in his head, and they're churning up some nasty stuff.
Sorry I haven't been able to read the new chapter yet! Life kinda took over, ya know?

Well, he's had a lot of nasty stuff happen to him. But I was rather proud of how his expression came out; I think the look on his face is why I like this picture so much.
You don't have to apologize, dear -- it's a fanfic, not homework! Trust me, I know all about life getting in the way.
