As the breeding season nears, the male caprequine, or stag, bands together with the other stags to make the long journey from their snow-capped mountain hideaways down to the open, warm plains where the females reside all year long.

Males usually reach their full-breeding age at 3 years, but very rarely will they own a harem at this age. The 3-year olds often make off with a yearling mare or 2 from the older stags. The older stags will often service a band of about 8 females, and it is not uncommon for a stag to service the same band year after year.

These creatures have no natural enemies, but large packs of carnivorous lizards often tail the herds during breeding season, as this is the only time they will be fortunate enough to have a taste of these massive beasts. Males will engage in battle with each other for females; these gruesome combats often end with a casualty.

Once the females cease their heat cycles, and births are eminent, the males band together and make the long trek back home to their high elevations to wait out another cold year for breeding season to occur once more.

Domestication

When domesticated, the males become much calmer and less vibrant in color. They also do not make their natural migration as their wild cousins do. Testosterone is a key ingredient for the stags migration, so it is very understandable that the domestic males have adapted to being born with only one testicle. These males can still breed, but lack the testosterone-driven urge that causes the wild stags to want to migrate.

There are rare occasions in which domestic males are born with 2 testicles. These animals are given to the warriors to be trained and ridden into battle. Using fully intact stags in war simulates the same testosterone levels used when migrating; thus keeping these rare stags healthy and calm.
