Description I had a lot of fun with the Equine Style meme. So I thought I'd take a step out of my comfort zone and try out the Wolf Style one. Also, fun but far more challenging than the Equine meme (I've been drawing horses for way longer than I have been drawing canines). It was difficult but I don't think I did too horribly. Plenty of room for improvement though.

This challenge features my 6 wolfdogs and my doggy-dog.

A closer look into each drawing:

#1 "My Style"
Featuring: Kefyra, my high content Alaskan Interior/Arctic wolfdog.

I don't have a particular style. It just comes out however it comes out. Sometimes it's more realistic, mostly it's more stylized. I went with a stylized look for this one so I could do realism in the next. I think the style and attitude of the picture captures the essence of Kefyra, who is very sweet but also incredibly smart at problem-solving. She seems to always be thinking about what to do next, and how to do it. She's a clever, sly girl; and I think the image captures this.

#2 "Realism"
Featuring: Tokalon, my high-content BC, Arctic, Timber wolfdog.

I admire any artist who has the patience and talent to make a drawing look exactly like a photo. It's not easy, and for the most part, it's VERY tedious. I used a recent photo of Tokalon as a reference; I liked the photo because it's essentially just a head/face shot of him, but he looks so sweet and innocent in the picture. So I drew it and then spent the next several hours in Photoshop turning it into a digital painting. I'm happy to report it does actually look just like the picture.

#3 "Wolf Children Style"
Featuring: Phantom, my mid-content BC, Arctic, Tundra wolfdog.

I know the meme directed the artist to attempt the style of another DA artist, but I personally feel that all stylized art styles resemble Balto in some way and all realistic styles resemble Wolf's Rain. I really wanted to do something quite different, so I decided to try my hand at the anime style we see in Wolf Children. I like it because the wolves don't look like either Wolf's Rain or westernized cartoon style. I also decided the unique style would go well with Phantom's unique coloring.

#4 "Big Bad Wolf Style"
Featuring: Wiley, my retriever/border collie mix. *NOT A WOLFDOG*

This particular Big Bad Wolf style can be seen in the Disney shorts "The 3 Little Pigs" and "The Big Bad Wolf", although there are many different styles in which this particular character has been portrayed. In all styles, he is a toothy antagonist looking to prey on the meek and innocent. Feeling the wolf as a species has had enough of this stereotypical image, I elected to choose my dog Wiley to be drawn in this style, and any other "vicious wolf" style. Wiley is a bossy dog who doesn't hesitate to show his teeth, even in innocent play. None of my wolfdogs would have looked natural in this snarling display, so I chose Wiley as a model for these ferocious shots.

#5 "Balto Style"
Featuring: Tsume, my mid-content Arctic/Timber/Malamute wolfdog.

Perhaps the most recognizable of all wolf styles, the Balto style wolves are the first to pop into one's head when it comes to animated movies with Canis Lupus as the subject matter. My big guy, Tsume, is roughly half wolf, so rather than draw him with the appearance of the pure wolves in the films, I decided to draw him in the style of the half-wolf star of the cartoon. The style and goofy expression are perfectly befitting for Tsume's silly personality.

#6 "Disney's Peter and the Wolf Style"
Featuring: Wiley, my retriever/border collie mix. *NOT A WOLFDOG*

Another Disney short portraying wolves and vicious man-eating monsters, the wolf in this cartoon appears to be even more savage than the Big Bad Wolf. Once again, the sight of this toothy beast brought my dog Wiley to mind. Always flashing that sparkling "smile", Wiley often looks like he's about to take a bite out of you! But it's just a show; he won't bite...well, not that hard anyway

#7 "Hanna-Barbera Style"
Featuring: Tsume, my mid-content Arctic/Timber/Malamute wolfdog.

There are several Hanna-Barbera characters that are wolves; and thankfully, these goofy lupines are not the ferocious creatures Disney makes them out to be. Instead, wolves in this style are usually dummies. The drawing itself looks like Yogi Bear with pointy ears and a fluffy tail; but would I say Ding-a-Ling Wolf is smarter than the average wolf? Not by a long shot. And neither is my big dope, Tsume. So while wolves are still being portrayed in a negative light, I suppose being dumb as opposed to being murderous is the lesser of the two evils. And no one can capture the essence of dumb like my Tsume!

#8 "Chuck Jones Style"
Featuring: Wiley, my retriever/border collie mix. *NOT A WOLFDOG*

A sassy lupine doppelganger of Wile E. Coyote, Ralph Wolf is apparently the red-nosed fellow who goes head-to-head with the sheepdog, Sam, in numerous Loony Tunes shorts. Interestingly enough, I adopted my Wiley from a wolfdog-specific rescue who took him in because he was claimed to be part coyote. Of course, he has no coyote in him at all, but I didn't think anyone could fit this style better than Wiley.

#9 "MGM's Hungry Wolf Style"
Featuring: Tokalon, my high-content BC, Arctic, Timber wolfdog.

I don't know much about this cartoon due to the fact that I've never seen it. But I did like the fact that it was an anthropomorphic wolf, which makes the style unique. The character sketches I studied online suggests this fellow is just a hungry animal looking to fill his stomach. This personality trait reminded me a lot of my pup, Tokalon, who is always hungry somehow, and constantly looking for a way to fill his already full tummy. Of course, the wolf in the cartoon is heart-breakingly emaciated while Tokalon is plump and happy, but you get the idea...

#10 "Maugli Style"
Featuring: Sorsha, my high-content British Columbian wolf.

This is a Russian Animated version of "The Jungle Book" with some unique designs on all the characters. The wolves, to me, look more like Akitas, but it's unique nonetheless; the lighting styles are interesting. I chose Sorsha for this style simply because it was easier to see her dark colors on this particular style without making the drawing too dark to appreciate the unique style. That was the only reason for me to portray Sorsha in this style, but now, I think the serious look of the drawing fits Sorsha's personality.

#11 "Paul Fierlinger Style"
Featuring: Phantom, my mid-content BC, Arctic, Tundra wolfdog.

This had to be the most difficult style for me to conquer. At first, I wasn't going to do it. I like drawings that look good, and the style for this particular cartoon is just downright horrible. What changed my mind was actually watching the cartoon, "It's So Nice to Have a Wolf Around the House". I was pleasantly surprised because, for once, the wolf turns out to be the good guy in the end. What a breath of fresh air that was. But now I had to draw in that horrible style. I'm right-handed, so when I attempted to draw the style, I kept trying to make it too perfect. So I decided to try something new: I drew this with my left hand. Couldn't be a perfectionist with my left hand even if I wanted to. This horribly-drawn style actually turned out as horrible as it's originally drawn, and for that I am proud. I chose Phantom to represent this character because it's really a sweet character and so is my Phanny.

#12 "Wolf's Rain Style"
Featuring: Ashira, my high-content Arctic wolf.

The epitome of all wolf-related TV shows, Wolf's Rain was a graphic series with amazing artwork. While the storyline fizzled into a very disappointing ending, the art in the show will always be in the top faves of many wolf and anime enthusiast. I wouldn't expect my girl Ashira to fit into any other style. I used a Toboe image as a reference instead of a Kiba image. Kiba, in my opinion, is too masculine to properly portray Ashira, who is as about as feminine as she can be. Toboe is lighter in structure and has slimmer facial features, which fits Ashira perfectly.
