That's a tricky one. Depends on what you are modelling for. Games modelling needs to be very clean, high-end modelling uses a lot of mesh smooth so it doesn't need to be too clean as mesh smooth or subd fixes the small problems like faces with more than 4 sides and the likes.
Erm... tips tips... try not to jump ahead of yourself when modelling. Get the basic shape and proportions down and then start adding more detail. There are so many things you need to think about when modelling it's tricky to sum it up briefly. Good luck with the course.

Thanks for the comment. Yus, the eyes are very good. Shame they are a generic eyeball model and texture for some of the creatures in the film, which I didn't do. But the eyes bring it to life.
I hope to post something soon. Working on a fairy (first ever female model) for a TV advert so I'll post the model screen grabs... and also I've got a plan to take it into ZB and do something nice with it. Just need to get a computer desk before I do it.
