My backyard "compact" Nuthatch checking me out before it heads to the feeder. Guess it wanted to be sure it was safe. Shot from my deck.Red-breasted Nuthatch

Excellent shot of the Red-breasted Nuthatch...I really love these birds, especially when they beep in the trees. That's how I find them anyways.

The bird was in a shadow and there was sunlight on both sides (as you can see by my low ISO - I was unprepared to take this photo, but it turned out ok!) but I think it's mostly the bright snow reflecting on the eyes.
