Intro:
“How long have I been wandering? Seasons? Years?
No free lands; days and days looking all the same… Barren lands with only thorn bushes and sand to be seen... and silence.”
The Wanderer
Dark golden eyes rose to meet with the slithering dunes and wind-swept sand. He stood low, his steps slow and steady as he reached the top of a high dune. There he stopped. His eyes shining with a new tint of life; there in the far distance, a long brown line broke the horizon could be seen. Could this be the end of the desert? The golden lion wanted to investigate further and he had hoped that it wasn’t a simple mirage deceiving his sight. Most likely it wasn’t anything. It could simply be an empty canyon that he had seen many times, but for some reason, something kept driving him closer.
The lion was closer now but he still had quite a bit a ways to walk; a few hours, maybe two? So he stopped to take a break and admire the scenery in front of him. Rocks looked as if they were reaching for the sky like headlands loomed over a sea of sand dunes and its stand courageously blocked the sand’s path. It has been a long time, and for once, the lion smiled. It was a small smile but a smile nonetheless. Stories of a place where the desert ended came into his mind as he looked around. Could this be the place that inspired such murmurs?
A hot gust of air drew him from his thoughts, then came a distant growl; buzzing at first then growling in his ears. Surprised, he cowered down, turned around with eyes laden with anxiety. Behind him a wall of sand began to devour everything in sight and it was coming his way. Knowing he had to get out of there, he turned and dashed away towards his destination once more. The sand was faster than he was and soon was upon him with a ferociousness that made him cough for air. This wasn’t his first sandstorm, but it must have been the most violent he’d ever been in. He tucked his nose into his tousled mane, and continued forth but soon had fallen out of time; too confused by the dusty red thick layer of sands making him walk dangerously blind. When he thought he couldn’t make any more steps blindly he suddenly felt his whiskers hit a rocky surface. Opening his eyes, the only thing he could see was the sandstorm and a dark menacing shadows towering over him as if he was an ant. He sighed and dropped flat to the ground. The lion then curled in a tight ball to protect himself against the merciless sways of the wind.
The wind had died down quite a bit by now but still held dust in it. He lifted his head up and shook off the sand covering him hole. It was now time to inspect his discovery, but first he would have to walk around to find a proper path since a steep cliff wasn’t something he dared to climb. The pale lion coughed and shook the remaining sand off his soft fur as he walked, then narrowed his eyes as he noticed some figures up ahead. They looked like lions, and they were gathered in a circle around something. Were they all crouched down from the sand still blowing? As the gold lion stalked closer to them, he noticed they were surrounding a lion, three of them leaning over the poor soul.
Were they…mourning?
Curiosity drew him in and as he took another step, but he was stopped in his tracks. Drawn by his curiosity, he made another step further, but stopped again in his track when a slight movement caught his attention. There, shielded by his mother’s paws was a little cub. She had spotted him already and was cowering against her mother’s belly. The cub’s agitation warned her mother who was already curling her lips at him. He averted his eyes before padding away up a trail that slithered up the rocky hills. As weak as he was from dehydration, he did not want to start a fight, especially with that many; things wouldn’t end well.
The hills the lion saw earlier were not a mirage after all. The lands now fell in a gorge, the cliffs steep and dangerous. The red sand was devoid of any plants and dry as the desert. Perched on a bridge, the golden lion leaned over the edge and looked down into the sandy abyss below. The view was disheartening, but he wasn’t ready to give up and return from whence he came. The wanderer had traveled so far, why give up now? Alone once more, he made his way across the gorge and continued to follow the path that the sandstorm created as it passed.
The earth he trod upon felt odd under his paws. Eyes glancing down, he noticed the sand cracked underneath the weight of his paws. Curious, he stopped and swept at the sand; it revealed fresh green grass. Excitement came over him as he looked on ahead. The sun was making the grass fight against the sand as it began to peek out from underneath the crust. His eyes trailed across the land in front of him and it looked like nature was fighting against the desert as it woke from it’s sandy slumber and reached for the sun once more.
Note: I finally found two such awesome peoples to help me correct all translated texts I have, this makes me way faster at submitting pictures. Since it was my first work, I decided to start with it fast, editing while writing it in english in a doc. I shall learn, of course I am slow, but still, there are few parts to come next and some cool pages to submit after the holidays if I have my job right and nothing bad happens to me! OvQ
Special thank to and , who both help me correct and edit a bit and gives me feedbacks. ^v^
