The Wanderer

The sun, though a blessing, was now starting to burn the traveler’s back. It was enough to draw him away from contemplation and into these new lands he had so far only heard stories about. The golden lion found himself walking on a rocky plain and explored each kopje with the revived excitement of a cub that drew attention and would constantly scare gazelles, scattering away from him in a blink of an eye.

He eventually ventured further and a river came in sight. The lion trotted towards it, but slowed down as voices rose and hit his ears. The lion crouched, crept towards the river’s ditch and remained hidden by the higher ground and inattention of the young creatures since he wasn’t standing against the wind.

“I’m telling you, it’s an opportunity we can’t miss; no-one is chasing us, we should stay here!” a fist voice said.

    -       It’s just a question of days if not hours,” a shaky voice answered the other.

The lion peered over the edge; to the other side, close to him, were two young lions arguing about staying or leaving. The youngest one barely had a longer coat for a mane and the second was only slightly older and unwisely bold with the little ruffled mane he sported.

“We could stay and hunt ourselves a feast tonight! Staying a day or two can’t be so bad,” the older spoke.

    -       I really don’t want to push our luck, what if the guardians find us?” He nervously looked around. He could even be stalking us right n-now.

    -       Don’t be ridiculous, we didn’t even...”

He interrupted his sentence short, for his eyes had met with those of the desert lion, who quickly stood and roared at the two as if the lands were his. The youngest trespasser was surprised and fled without even taking a look behind. The second, although he was cowering down and backing away stood his ground, a daring pluck that could quickly turn into a costly mistake. The golden lion walked closer and closer, slowly as to let the young one contemplate just how much he was no match to him, then charged at the old cub who fled, running after his companion. Our desert lion chuckled, then nonchalantly leaned over the clear water and drank his fill.

Watching the herd’s movements from under the shade of a tree proved highly soporific, the tired traveller was now sleeping soundly. He had walked beyond tired for hours along the borders as he tried to meet with this land’s pride and couldn’t seem to find anything but marked bushes with fading scent and old tracks slithering on forever inside the lands. It wasn’t long that the male lion thought about the mourning circle and what probably was the fate of the missing guardian of this territory. The absence of the lionesses was probably just them doing everything they could to avoid his presence to protect their precious cubs. Of course, he could be wrong, but this didn’t changed the decision he came to before falling asleep; he wouldn’t let any foul lion get what he now considered as his heaven.
