I can only imagine all the thoughts that ran through her mind when turning into Nightmare Moon.Personally I like to think it was more of a gradual change than an instant one (like when she pretended to be Nightmare Moon during the Nightmare Night Celebrations). Just having all these confusing and conflicting feelings in her head sounds interesting to me.

I agree with you on your idea. In addition to that, I always saw it as some kind of Anakin-esque event, with Luna's ambition and insecurity being manipulated by some outside force until she eventually gave in to the... dark side... *dun dun dun* I have a more lengthy idea, but that's the basic thought.

Replace that scene near the end with Celestia and Luna (where Anakin decides to go against Obi-wan despite him having the high ground) and use this dialogue:
Celestia: Sister, it's over! I have the Elements!
Luna: You underestimate my power...
Celestia: Don't do it, Luna...
Luna: *Fully gives into darkness and attempts to lash out with all of her hate*
*suddenly, the Elements hit her and leave her disabled and at the mercy of her sister*
*cue sad music*
Celestia: You were one of the chosen ones, alongside me! It was you who would destroy chaos and evil, not join it; bring harmony to the world, not leave it in darkness!
Luna/NMM: I. Hate. You!
Celestia: You were my sister, Luna... I loved you... I still do...
*turns away with a tear in her eye and allows the Elements to do their job*
...and that's how Equestria was mad- wait, that's a terrible way to conclude a depressing ending.

Gone are the days when someone could put forth a theory and actually invoke thought. Now it has become the, "your-idea-is-different-than-mine-I-will-now-rage-at-you-for-no-reason" mentality-- pretty depressing...

Heavily opinionated thought. Read at your own risk:
In the country I live in (I'd rather no assume everyone lives in the USA-- quite a common mistake people make on the Internet) I'm always amazed at the hypocrisy people display. Land of Freedom? Psh, only if your views are in sync with the other sheeple. The minute you try and stand out or be original, you usually get shot down. Granted, there are always those who manage to succeed, but they're an oddity in a nation that boasts something that is also restricts. I blame society and its cutthroat nature-- we're terrible people xD.

I always believed it was gradual as well.
My theory for the longest time was that she was influenced by Discord to start doubting herself and others.
I think he hinted at the idea that she wasn't 'loved' like her sister and very slowly, years after she and Celestia teamed up to turn him to stone, his words got to her. At first she denied what he said to her but she began to noticed that the ponies were more active during the day and they DID seem happier during Celestia's reign under the sun.
In my head, Discorded Luna = Nightmare Moon.
I could actually write a much longer and more detailed synopsis but it isn't necessary here. XD
Anyway, this is beautifully drawn and colored. Like always.
I want to know something, though. In the pilot, Nightmare Moon was upset because the ponies played during the day... But she is Princess of the Night and can walk in their dreams... So does that count as 'playing'? Doesn't it at least count as 'interacting'? She was able to visit her subject whenever she wanted. XD But I guess when you're 'discorded' things don't always make sense.

Yeah, same here. He just said that one thing and it took awhile to get to her, nagging her in the back of her mind kind of thing.
At the same time I feel like maybe she started changing in her mood and actions towards others, being slightly more hostile and that maybe Celestia noticed it but didn't think of it as anything more than a phase. Or maybe she didn't want to believe that Luna was turning on her, in fear of having to fight against her sister.
I say go ahead if you want, I love to read different theory's especially when it comes to the alicorns and Discord and what not. I love how there are so many different and detailed idea's for these characters from the fan base

Yeah that's what I was wondering too. I'm taking a lucky guess that maybe some ponies didn't like her interacting with them in their dreams, seeing it as infringement on their privacy and maybe they lashed out at her for doing so. Or if they did interact with her and played and what not they probably forgot about it by morning, like people usually do when it comes to dreams (or at least I do
