The night was quiet. In the distance a nocturnal songbird sang to anyone who could hear, declaring his territory, trying to attract a mate. The brook flowing through the gardens burbled obliviously. As usual the garden was lovely, night-floweres were blooming in the light of the waxing moon and the sky was utterly cloudless, the full light of the stars and moon shining down. The pale stone of the chimera statue fairly gleamed, every detail discernible. No master sculptor ever carved such a lifelike and detailed work. The garden was unkempt, in spite of the efforts of the royal gardeners. Whatever grew here refused to be controlled. Tree roots moved stones, grass became unruly overnight, new plants moved in and transplanted shrubs refused to remain trimmed.
Celestia had finally told the gardeners to give up on it. Though they still wondered why THIS spot refused to be tamed. Celestial knew. It was HIS influence. The seal was different now, forged by truer friendship than she had shown the day she'd sealed him. Truer than the friendship she'd finally shattered the day she'd exiled Luna.
"Sister?"
Celestia turned at the sound her her sister's voice and smiled. "Just dwelling on the past, Luna. I didn't realize I was late for our nightly flight."
Luna shook her head at she approached, standing next to her before the sealed body of Discord, "No I...do not feel like flying tonight. I miss him."
Celeistia stretched her wing out to cover her sister, pulling her close, "So do I, but it will not be long now. Our powers wane, sister, I know you have felt it. They will last but a while longer. Another age, perhaps, long enough for Cadence to learn what she needs to know, long enough for Shining Armor to become what he must. Long enough to undo my folly."
"Sister, it was no-"
"It was folly. Foolish pride and ambition. Discord saw it for what it was..."

"...see your plans for what they are, Celestia." Discord said, "Surely you don't believe you can control EVERYTHING."
"What are the Elements of Harmony for if not to being order to the world? We can help everyone, Discord! All ponies throughout the world, even the dragons, the spirits, every being brought into orderly balance where they can prosper to their utmost ability. We can influence some things now but if we hope to achieve everything we have sought though all our adventures, it MUST begin with the sun and moon! I could...we could even help you. I know I can fix the parts of your chaotic body that trouble you so persistently."
More than a few parts he knew, better than she did, even if he had explained them all long ago. Pain was his constant companion, the eternal reminder of his unnatural existence. He gazed about the cave in the Mountain of Creation, the ritual was prepared, but Celestia lacked a few key components. They had been discussing how to find them.
The world was too chaotic, even now. His own existence was proof of that, but there were other signs, the lengths of days varied, the seasons were not always reliable. They had even witness a mountain range rise in a matter of days, only to be drowned by the sea weeks later. Few places in the world were stable enough to live, nearly all sentient beings on the planet were forced to be nomadic. When they'd heard tell of the Mountain of Creation, the three of them, Celestia, Luna and Discord, and sought it out. They'd hoped to find a way to calm the chaos of their corner of the universe. But then Celestia had realized the true power of the place, and a new plan had formed in her mind.
"You're going to take away their freedom, not give them the balance they need. This ritual is as unnatural as I am."
She turned then and he saw the fury in her eyes, "I AM GOING TO GIVE THEM PEACE! HAPPINESS! ORDER AND HARMONY!"
He moved back, startled at her anger, even his least tasteful pranks had never elicited such anger. "You cannot do this, please, just-"
"I will not allow you to stop me!" Her horn flashed and suddenly it was difficult to move. He began to gather his strength to break free...
"Luna! Help me sister! He must not stop us!"
"Sister, but I-" Luna hesitated.
It was all Discord needed, he released a burst of his magic, and bubbles burst from the stone, obscuring everything. She was distracted and suddenly he was free. In a flash he fled the cave, Celestia's cry of anger following him.
As the bubbles cleared, Luna approached her older sister hesitantly. "Sister, I am sorry. But without the Element of Balance and Chaos..."
Celestia shook her head, "No, no it is fine, dear sister. There will be no place for chaos in the world now. Our Elements my Order and Magic, your Compassion and Loyalty, they will create truer Balance. Now, we must prepare. Discord will oppose us and we must be ready to fight him..."
And they did fight. Their battles shook the earth. Discord's Element had finally granted him the control he lacked, and even more fantastic powers besides. Even so, the two sisters overpowered him, finally, in the dark Valley of Labyrinths, where the last Ink of Creation was kept, guarded by a black dragon that Discord had convinced to help him.
As he lay in the dust of the valley floor, Discord could see Luna streak by. A single blast of black and violet energy from her horn knocked the dragon aside. But more than that, he saw Celestia standing over him. Beautiful and terrible she looked to him now, power rolled through her like an ocean held at by. Her mane and tail had become like raw energy, and he'd seen Luna's as well, a galaxy of stars whirling through her mane.
He laughed, "Do you not see the supreme irony? The Elements of Harmony the cause of our downfall...what a joke."
"You are the only one who has fallen, Discord." Her voice was vast now, echoing across the valley, as though she spoke with a thousand voices instead of one.
"No, I am only the first of us." The vision had come to him the night before their attack. It was as though the Element he wore had spoken to him. "Luna's heart already begins to harden. She only wants your love and approval, instead you command her to fight her friend."
"You are not our friend anymore. It is my heart that is hardened with your betrayal." Her gaze was cold, but he saw the unshed tears behind her eyes.
"Your reign will be a thousand years of sadness, Celestia. Without my Element your spell will have no permanency. The planet would have found balance without us, we only needed to guide it to quicken the process."
"You lie."
"No, now I see so clearly it's painful. My element has shown me our future. I see two of them. Kill me and your realm will end in blood, your sister will hate your for eternity, and your war will reduce the world to ashes. You have it in you to slay, I can see it, the rage...it stems from your love."
Her horn shone with terrible power, white and pure and blinding, but he gazed on it unblinking. "Oh, I see that you won't. I'm glad. Now know this: my return will herald the end of your reign. When your power begins to wane, if you have finally discovered the true meaning of Harmony, you must prepare, if you wish for your efforts to not be in vain."
Her power lashed out and struck him. Throwing him to the ground. He stood slowly and looked down at himself. "Ah, stone. What an uninteresting choice." He looked her in the eyes as her tears began to flow. "I may not get to say it for a long time. I love you, Celestia." And the stone closed over him, but not before he managed to strike a pose.
Celestia's legs quivered as the grief washed over her, and she collapsed. She could not remain here. Luna would be preparing the final portion of the ritual. She was needed to form it's core. She blinked away the tears as stood.
As she moved to remove the Element from Discord's stone neck it cracked. She barely had an instant to through of a magical barrier as it shattered, the shards flying everywhere. When the dist settled, she saw two stone spheres, each set with a single gem, one blue and one purple. She wasn't sure if she believed Discord's little prophecy. But she slipped the spheres into her saddlebags regardless, and left the valley...

"...and he was right. My obsession turned us all against each other. When you returned, it was those six friends who saved you from turning into Nightmare Moon for all eternity. I only gave my student the guidance she would need."
Luna nodded, nuzzling her sister, "And you had already found Cadence."
"I felt her the day she was born a slight...shift, in my power. Spring came unexpectedly early that year, as though the planet was welcoming her, new life springing forth in response to her presence. The Elements of Harmony made flesh."
"We should have realized it," Luna said sadly, "Our adventures were never so wonderful as when the two of you realized your love for each other."
Celestia blushed slightly, "Well, I..."
"We do have time before he is finally released. Perhaps you can use the time to work on your apology." Luna said with a grin.
"Ah! Luna!" Celestia cried indignantly.
"I know how it will be, you will have it perfectly worded and the whole speech will fly from your mind like a startled pegasus filly when he kisses you."
"Such impenitence! Didn't mother teach you to speak to your older sister with more respect?!"
Luna only laughed as she took to the air.
"I am NOT finished, little sister! You come back here!" Celestia chased after her laughing sister, still blushing furiously.
As they chased through the sky, silvery peals of laughter followed by embarrassed indignant commands, there seemed to be a bit of movement in the garden. The next day, a passing gardener would note that there seemed to be more wildflowers than usual, blooming in near the statue. As he blinked he could have sworn that the smile on the chimera seemed a a little bit broader than before.

i wonder that too because of
a. Look at his pose. the way that he was in stone before he got free
b. the way he talked to her. he was actually kind of calm with her. She just seemed to be more caucous of him
