You do understand the concept of adopts, adoptees, and adopt artists, right? The adopt artist will create a design whether it be a character, an outfit, a weapon, etc.. and then set it to auction or a set price. The potential adoptees will then look at the design and decide if they want to adopt that design. Now, once bought, the adoptee will get the full detailed picture not shown on the official auction/buy it now page, and the adoptee will get the rights to re-draw that design, write with that design (whether a novel, flashfiction, or just roleplay), or commission another artist (or that same artist) to draw that design. Some adoption artists will clearly state that if you publish any artwork with their designed character, then there's usually a small extra fee. Otherwise, usually adoption artists won't mind if you write with that character and then publish. The actual adoption artwork file isn't meant to be claimed as the adoptee's own artwork, however, it serves as the base for the character design they have purchased. For example, I wouldn't go and upload this to my own gallery, however, if I wrote a story with this character in it, then I would upload that to my gallery. If I actually drew instead of write and I wanted to upload an artwork of this character, then that's different and I could upload the character.
I, myself, like to adopt characters that I write into stories or sometimes, just because I like to roleplay or commission other artists to draw that design. I may have two original series that I write on and off on my free time, plus a stand alone novel, all that have my original characters that were NOT adopted from someone, but still.. I actually enjoy purchasing the rights to a pre-designed character from time to time. The idea behind it is that you get inspired by the character concept and idea and you want to work with it. For me personally, even if I end up NOT writing something with said character, I enjoy having the rights to the character and may decide to have something drawn with them in the future.
It's not for everyone, and I mean, I usually only use adopted characters for short stories or flash fictions just for fun, but some people really just enjoy having a pre-designed character and a lot of people use them for role-play. I personally enjoy creating my own characters from scratch for my stories (my 1st series is 3 books and my 2nd is 6 books, and the characters are my design), but I mean, from time to time I adopt and then that character becomes a part of a smaller story.
Sometimes an adoption artist will also have it in their terms to provide a small disclaimer in the description of any future uploads of art or writings, however, most don't. I personally enjoy adding the adoption artist's name and share the artwork I commission with the adoption artist.
