Description Final project for Survey of Computer Art Applications. We could do whatever the hell we wanted as long as it used Photoshop, Illustrator, In-Design or some other Adobe software. I decided to do an 8-page comic and throw some halftones on there using the super-duper technical-sounding bitmapping technique.

I can tell you everything that is wrong with this comic right now, including, but not limited to:

MOIR in the halftones

The dock keeps changing sizes

The fish turns into Supergator in the last panel

I stopped caring about black placement halfway through

etc, etc

BUT DESPITE ALL OF THAT I'M VERY HAPPY WITH THIS. It turned out much nicer than I expected, especially since this was my first time using halftones. I was also kind of experimenting with angles and the 180 degree rule the whole time, so it was quite a learning experience. Thanks to everyone for the feedback for the first page.

ONLY ONE MORE FINAL TO GO!

This makes my heart SUPER happy!

Anyways.... I think you're being too harsh on yourself with your critiques of this.... the dock/pier doesn't (to my eyes) seem to change overly much. there may be a little variation, but hardly noticeable.

I say it's good. SO IT IS.

turnbull, she was a cool lady but waaaaay too into the whole OMG CONCEPT! idea. And she took off for the tiniest things. >:I

I can't complain too much though, because I had an 89.75 at the end of the quarter and she was kind enough to bump it up to a 90 so I'd have the A.

Hmm...that "whatever the hell you want" final...did you have prof. Lovelace? At least I think that was her name...anyway your style is so great for comics, and despite it being cartoony, you still pay a lot of attention to the backgrounds. It looks awesome!

FREAKING. FISHMAN.

simple, yet brilliant. i could tell where the pages were stitched due to the panel placement, but that just read like paragraphs, and i'd call it a plus, if anything. coherent thoughts and incoherent subject matter.

faved like the fist of an angry god. perhaps Neptune.

in other news, for the uninitiated, could you briefly elaborate on the 180 degree rule?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyNameIsMad In reply to redfeatherraven [2009-05-30 01:51:07 +0000 UTC]

the 180 degree rule is the idea that if you have two characters next to each other they NEED to stay on their own side in every frame unless you have a panel or sequence devoted entirely to showing them switching sides. You don't think about it a lot but the human mind will subconsciously know when characters are appearing where they shouldn't be, even when you didn't mean for that to happen.

redfeatherraven In reply to MyNameIsMad [2009-05-30 03:02:59 +0000 UTC]

just to make certain i've got a bead on this...thus the fisherman tends to stay to the right, and the fish to the left, unless the panel is an explicit interaction (such as the fish breaking the pole, although focus was still more on the fisherman), or the sequence calls for it (such as the fish growing arms and legs).

correct?

I think the ending is a teense abrupt, since there's not much to slow down the action (Perhaps divide the final frame into three, with the first two just being the guy, and the third with the "!?" appearing?). Overall, though, this is amazing.

MyNameIsMad In reply to Azzen [2009-05-25 22:42:59 +0000 UTC]

I'd probably do that if this was for an actual sequential arts class, but for now i'm gonna have to let it be and move on to other finals, haha

Thanks!
