Description This painting was requested by =Nesi , who wanted something visual inspired from his poem, In This Silence . His visual interpretation of this (what he asked of me) is slightly different from the finished product. Unfortunately, since the paint is still extremely wet, I'm having a hard time photographing it without some sort of glare. In a week or so I should be able to capture it much better, and then I'll offer it as a print if you so desire, Nesi.

All of the imagery has specific metophorical meaning, as well as a certain connection to the poem itself. The only real divergence is the dying trees, instead of the decaying roses. For me, this seemed to suit a more interesting visual composition.

As the paint is still drying, I'm sure I'll make changes and refine a lot of the image, so constructive critiques are more than welcome.

Oil Paint on Canvas, 24 x 36 inches.

UPDATE: Much better digital photo taken... though there still is a bit of glare at the top, it's much more true to life. I'll take a few more in a week or so and see if I can't get a better shot.

UPDATE 2: Thank you to ssecret and spinegrinder for the DD. I wish I had taken a better photograph of this now, but it's already been sold. Thanks to everyone for their love and support.

This is great. When I first saw the thumb in the DD box It reminded me of something Dali would do.

Thank you But I fear you flatter me... Dali is far more advanced than me! This was my first surrealist attempt!

You are smart to watermark this, it is truly amazing! You have a fabulous imagination. The checkered floor looks fantastic against the rich red. I want to be INSIDE this world you have created, really wonderful.

Thanks This was my first surreal piece, I think I'm going to revisit the style after my current project is done.

The textures on the checkerboard really are lovely. It's like I could run my fingers across the board and feel the bumps that obviously exist in the red, falling atmosphere. A very tangible and impressive surrealist work!

Very surreal. I know there's some whining and moaning going on about this, but I must say that your painting does a lot the poem doesn't and is a distinctly different piece. Good work.

Thank you. I thought a lot about it, and it isn't purely derivative. I actually changed the entire mood of the piece, I think, by taking his decaying imagery and making things suspend in a state of not-dead-yet sort of feel. Instead of people falling, they still float in silence.

You really managed to take vague abstractions in words and make a solid concrete image here. Fantastic job.

I like it a lot.

it makes me sad and a bit nervous in the same time.

may be cuz there is never absolute silence?

mynti In reply to Moniquette [2006-04-20 03:32:48 +0000 UTC]

It is kind of sad, isn't it? But not quite something to fear... more like... you wish they weren't isolated and floating around, and connected somehow in a less harsh world. Well maybe I'm going too far

aww gracie this is so cool!! I love how you can still see the brush strokes, it adds a nice texture to it and my favorite part is the square floor and the trees. Such pretty colors you used to make the branches

Nesi In reply to hottgermanchick [2006-04-16 12:39:18 +0000 UTC]

It's not a squre floor. It's a checkersboard. Floating around the decaying world.

I should know. I wrote the poem that you haven't read.

hottgermanchick In reply to Nesi [2006-04-16 14:54:52 +0000 UTC]

oooo let's not get our panties in a twist! I was gonna go back and read it, cuz at the time i wasnt able to. Maybe it would have been nice for you to not critisize me and just tell me to go read your poem, especially since the picture is not your artwork.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Nesi In reply to hottgermanchick [2006-04-16 15:55:22 +0000 UTC]

First, I apologise, it's just pisses me off pretty badly that people never read poetry, and that artists that put out even the lamest graphics will have more views than my better poems.
Yes. That's reality, but that's not a reason why I shouldn't bitch about it.

Second, most people were gonna read it, most people gonna do stuff. I was gonna learn guitar. Until the day I decided that it's not gonna. And I started learning how to play the guitar. I'm one hell of them procrastinators.. I know what means "gonna"

Thirdly, yes. The picture is not my artwork. But the idea behind it, the concept and everything that revolves in it is, in more than one way, mine. So when you say how lovely it is, without taking the less-than-a-minute-it-takes to read my poem, you miss a whole point.

And lastly, I am a free man and as such, I'm allowed to criticize any human behaviour that I don't see fit. Including such as I mentioned in the point above...

But it's all in good spirit... So I guess I should apologize if I hurt your feeling or something like that...

hottgermanchick In reply to Nesi [2006-04-16 23:26:28 +0000 UTC]

it's whatever, i cant please everyone and I was going to go back and read it. I actually left it in my message box so that i could go back to it. You're right about the poetry though. A picture is more beautiful to me than words. I'm not much for poetry because I dont know how to express myself through words. I read your poem, but Gracie's piece spoke more to me than yours did, because I understand visual things. Dont yell at me because I dont love poetry. I accept your apology, but you really dont need to center your attacks on me.
If you dont mind, i dont want to talk about this anymore, especially on Gracie's picture
