Description
My first try in bookbinding, inspired by our Creative Craft Challenge over at .This is 100% recycled (well, except for the glue and thread
I used a stationary set that I bought in a thrift store a few months ago, it's a beautiful set of hand made papers and envelopes. The pages of the book are made from two letter pages, cut into 18 double-pages (giving the book 68 writable pages).
I gathered three double-pages into stacks, folding them in half and thus creating six sets of 12 pages. I sewed and bound them together, glued them together with a piece of backing paper (a scrap from cutting the pages) and then used the first and last page to glue the whole thing to the covers.
The covers are made from one envelope from the stationary set (it has real leaves in the paper), glued to pieces of cardboard salvaged from an old frozen pizza carton.
The bookmark is made from braided embroidery thread, the same kind of thread that I used for sewing the pages together.
It was a lot of fun to try and I subsequently made a bunch more books because it's just so easy and fun to do!

Lovely cover design - I think it looks particularly nice on the spine. What technique did you use to sew the signatures together?

Thank you!
They're sewn through the fold.

Maybe I just have prettier paper. Isn't it fun making books? I love it.

you definitly have prettier paper! but i think u also do a better job than me too. lol. it is fun! i wish i had more time to do them more often, but school usually takes up most my time. i love that you put little loops in some for a keychain or necklace, that is such a cute idea!
do any of your books have any issues with the cover papers?
MyntKat In reply to BlueElCaminoSS [2010-03-01 04:49:50 +0000 UTC]
I leave some space between the cardboard for the covers and the spine, so there's some room for the covers and spine to move. Depending on the size of the book, I usually leave about a fourth of the width of the spine. And once they are bound and dry, I fold the space in a bit so the spine lies closer to the book. (I hope that makes sense)
That way the cover papers aren't under a lot of stress. I also use a very strong glue.

lol, yea u made sense, but i had to read it twice because my bf was talkin to me, yea, i do that too, but i think i just need to make some crappy practice books untill i get it right. lol! btw, where do u get your paper? i have a hobby lobby near me, but none of their papers are pretty and shiny like yours.

Just make sure to glue them all the way to the end and let them fully cure before stressing them. (curing is not the same as drying, glue is often dry after an hour or so, but curing sometimes takes several days, read up on it on your glue package, it should state the curing time)
I get my papers from all kinds of different sources. I usually buy them whenever I see pretty papers around. A good spot to shop are stores that carry scrapbooking supplies, they often have amazing papers. I also find quite a few great ones in random dollar stores.

Very pretty!
Is it actually easy to do? Would you use an old sewing machine, or is it just like sewing a thick fabric? (Because if it doesn't damage the machine, I might have to try it out, since these are the perfect gifts for any age, gender, etc.)

I just hand sewed it all. You make stacks for the paper and use a sharp needle to poke the holes through, then you sew through the pre-made holes, so it's really easy. I don't think a sewing machine would work since the stitches are rather far apart and have to be woven together in the back to hold the stacks of paper together. This tutorial shows well how I sewed the paper together (I made the covers after a different tutorial though, but I liked this way of sewing best).

Lol, it occurred to me after I hit 'send', that it was probably hand-sewn.
Thanks for the link to the tute, and for the inspiration - my friend wants me to make her a book of fun and inspirational quotes, and instead of trying to find the perfect book to put them in, I think I may just try to make one myself!

lovely ^^
is it really that easy to make?
I thought about making one myself, since I get a lot of paper from work (I just have to cut it to one size), but I'm not sure about how difficult it is.

Just check out the link to the craft challenge, there are a few tutorials linked. There are a ton more tutorials in the tutorial gallery, too.
I found it very easy to make, though these are not very complicated books, either. The only problem was getting the glue all over myself, but I'm kinda clumsy like that.

Very delicate and precisely put together! I've made a few books before during my Photography course and it was so fiddly. These look very 'professional' though. Especially with the hard spine.
Awesome job!

Thank you! I didn't find it fiddly at all, it came totally natural to me... I've wanted to try bookbinding for so long.
It's just one though, I took pictures from different angles.
