There are so many people here on dA that I am just now discovering. It's quite amazing. I think the quality of art has come up in the two years since I joined...but maybe it was always there and I was just isolated. The better search engine helps and I see more people doing journal features too. Anyway, happy to meet you and I'll be 'walking' trough your gallery soon.

Yes, I know what you mean...both with regards to the people, and with regards to the art. Although with the art I do think that perhaps it's just a question of *finding* the talented and interesting people. Though I'll back off from that statement and say that many of the people I admire most today weren't posting work of the caliber that they're doing *now*, two years ago--so maybe it's a combination of both finding and evolving. (Goodness knows my work evolves all the time! )

Oddly--I don't use the search engine at all...but my time tends to be very limited...and I rely mostly on finding people through others--often through browsing the favorites of people I already watch, I find new work that excites me--and sometimes I'm fortunate enough to have someone find me--and I discover them during a reciprocal visit--which is always especially delightful!

Hopefully I'll be posting some new work, during this new year...I have a new loft, with a studio in it, and a new camera--so I have no excuse not to get off my behind and create!

I am in the same boat as you with too little time and too many people to watch, so I rarely use the search. I find others via journals, features and faves of those I admire. And very very occasionally a 'random dev' click. My work has certainly gotten better. I think when I first started here, I had such a backlog and such a demand to
'show' work that anything and everything went up! Now I'm a bit more picky and shoot less but (I hope) better. I'm inspired by quite a few artists here. equivoque has been a huge help because she finds amazing artists.

A new loft!! OMG... and studio. That is what I want so badly! I will have a new darkroom which should be fun... along with a large working space soon. I can't wait to see what you produce. Exciting!

Yeah, I think a lot of people (eventually, at least) wind up using dA the same way...it's an easy way of weeding out alot of the junk that's out there, and getting right to the Good Stuff.

I pretty much had the same experience as you (with posting volumes of work)-- at another location. I found dA when I was already very well established on pBase--so I was more able to pick and choose what I posted here--more of my romantic/fantasy stuff, less of my straight stuff. It's nice, when you can see how your work has improved...although it's also kind of embarrassing, when you see stuff you used to think was pretty cool--and now you mostly see the flaws in it. (And now I've gotten to the point where even much of my dA work--so carefully selected because I thought it was my "best" for various reasons doesn't make me happy anymore...it MOSTLY doesn't embarrass me...but it's not as good as I used to think it was! )

(And thanks for the pointer to equivoque--a quick glance confirms your opinion! I've just added her to my watch! )

YES--a new loft with a studio in it! Doesn't it sound glamorous??!! I grew up out west (California, Idaho, Colorado), so was quite shocked to move to Boston and see how TINY apartments are out here!!! For the last 11 years or so I lived in a darling wee little one bedroom with 496 sq ft of room in it...every inch of which was packed with Victorian bric-a-brac, antiques, books, plants and "found" pieces of nature. When they decided to double my rent--I decided that it was time to find double the space...with my requirements being a separate bedroom, room for a livingroom area, and a minimum of 12' x 20' open area for a studio, so I could have my lights up all the time, and it would be easy to practice and do shoots, even if I only had an hour or so of free time. Which pretty much meant a loft...and eventually, I found one, in the artsy section of Boston, in a sort of yuppy loft building. (I'll tell you--everytime I enter the building, I feel like I'm finally a really truly Grown-Up! And at almost 40, it's about time! ) Of course, I don't own, I'm only renting...and I no longer have any disposable income...but money's overrated, right?

I confess that I've only ever shot digital...so the mysteries of a darkroom will forever remain mysteries to me--all I need is Photoshop, a PC, a Wacom, and a calibrated monitor...but I know from all my "purist" friends that for those who use 'em, there's nothing like having your own darkroom--so I'm very very happy for you! And the large workspace will be wonderful, as well--congratulations!!! (And now I get to look forward to what YOU produce with it all! )

(And if you ever find yourself in Boston...you can always drop in and play in *my* little studio! )

A loft would be so wonderful! I'm thinking I may rent some funky place in an arts district so I can shoot in a studio setting. Here in Michigan it is relatively inexpensive compared to our coastal cities.

I love Boston and when I get back there, I will definitely let you know I'm in the vicinity!

That sounds like a great idea--especially if the rents are affordable!!! (Besides--it's just so cool to be around other artsy people--it generates a special kind of energy! )

And I would LOVE to meet you in person, and gossip and play with cameras! That'll be something to look forward to, one of these days!
