I kind of have to agree with you. Beren and Luthien were a very selfish couple and I can't say I'm altogether fond of any of the line of Thingol. But this is a wonderful rendition of this scene.

Thank you so much for your comment!Β
I worried that Finrod was too soft and gentle in my previous works. I wanted to show he wasn't a flower and despite his immense kindness and love for everything was capable of tough actions for the sake of noble goals.Β

only thing I have a slight issue is that Beren like an old man in this shadow. But I suppose he probably felt worse then ancient after that stay in that dungeon...Β Β
Man, Finrod and that wolf's struggle though is riveting. One of the best dang elves in that book.Β

Please, sorry for the late reply
I remember you were a fan of drama - so here it is - a dramatic dramaΒ Β
In fact, I do not really like Beren, so I cared least about his appearance in this pictureΒ Β

Aw why don't you like Beren? What's not to like about him?

Maybe I'm wrong, but the Beren and Luthien seem to me quite a selfish couple. They were capable of such miracles and exploits, but only for the sake of each other, no one else. For example Beren led out from Nargothrond its lord, without doubt whether his love was worth such victims, although the main thing, probably, is that his love didn't make him better, as one might suppose, but on the contrary - he was a real hero, there were even a reward declared for his head. I don't understand how, after everything, he stopped interested in the affairs of the world. He just gone to his forest, and that's the end of his story.
Sorry,Β maybe I want too much from himΒ Β  Β

That being said I do think Beren and luthien keeping the Silmaril was a big mistake and it probably was a sign of greed. Because not even Thingol was free from the greed of the silmaril.
Tolkien even said that the silmaril actually hastened their deaths. So the whole role of the silmaril was rather foolish but Tolkien's whole point was that whoever comes in contact with a silmaril ultimately comes to a bad end.
So for me I don't think their love made them selfish. Maybe they were imperfect but I don't think Tolkien portrayed them as selfish.

I can understand why you feel like Beren and luthien should have done something else besides Retreat from the world.
For myself I wonder if after all that happened to Beren losing his entire family, losing the lands of his father, and just constantly having to battle the forces of morgoth maybe Beren felt like he had to just be by himself and he was just tired of trying to save the world.
Honestly I'm not sure what Beren and luthien really could have done against morgoth because morgoth was undefeatable even by luthien. Because he was a vala.
I think what Tolkien wanted to show is that after all they've been through they deserve some rest and that's what's seclusion represented for them.

Well, I hope Beren got what he really wanted.
And of course, it's just my impression, not claiming to be the highest truth
Thank you very much for the fascinating conversations!!!Β Β

I think he did get what he wanted. He got piece of some sort and to be with the woman he loved. You know I feel like that the fate of Beren is in some ways a parallel to Tolkien himself. Cuz Tolkien went through a time of war and Terror and he lost a lot of people he loved. And I'm sure when he finally came back to his wife all he wanted was to go hide in the woods and Retreat from the world.
Anyway thank you for this talk. It's very nice to be able to talk to someone who loves these characters and knows so much of the fandom history like me. Where I live there is not a lot of people who are really into this fandom like me. Which I suppose is why I come here haha

If it consoles you, there will hardly be a couple of people among my acquaintances who know what the Silmarillion is, so I have to look for kindred souls somewhere on the Internet too. Β
In short, welcome at any time, I'm always happy to chat with youΒ Β

This is just great! Really my favourite illustration of this moment. It's very dynamic and dramatic, I like the composition and the fact that Beren is also here. Amazing work!

One of the saddest but also the most noble and heroic moments in The Silmarillion. I love Finrod! He looks so strong, brave and resolute here. Thank you for drawing this.

Finrod's most awesome moment. I bet that Finarfin and EΓ€rwen was proud of him, but also sad to hear that it caused his death
