Description
quick marker work. I'm not the best at markers, but I really needed to blow off some steam. So another little in-between-work, dedicated to the spring flowers that have started to show their heads around here.I know the dragons won't be able to fly with those wings. I don't care. There's a lot of things that aren't right on this picture. Feel free to mention a flaw if you see one.
Media: Letraset promarkers and Faber Castell black artist pens.
Texture added in Gimp to ensure nobody gets blinded by the white background.

I'm not so sure about them X) the wings are a bit too high up for my taste, I could have done a better job here. But it's a fairly old piece, so I might redo it sometime in the future
I use Letraset Promarkers. They're a bit cheaper than copics and fun to collect.

oh id love to see you redo this one and im feeling much better today! so I went down to go get some new art stuff and picked up some water color pencils (which I am still learning how to use, im not too good wich anything involving color) and I tried to find some Promarkers like you mentioned and I just didn't see any at all!

hey, picking up new art supplies is always loads of fun. Don't go overboard with it, though. If you're not very confident in your coloring skills, I certainly wouldn't recommend picking up a whole new set of markers. They're expensive and difficult to handle. Also, if you're not used to coloring your drawings, you won't know which colors define your style most and that will make it difficult to choose the correct starting set of markers. Try using the tools you have at your disposal right now first and see if you're comfortable with those before trying out something new.
If you really want to get markers anyway, I had a discussion about them with ~Vulpixie95 a bit further down in the comments of this deviation. You can scroll down a bit and read that for information. It contains my thoughts on starter packs and the basic construction of a basic set of colors.

Alright then, if you're sure about it and you want to branch out with different materials, that's fine too I just buy my promarkers from the art supply store every now and then. I don't know where you live so I wouldn't know where they sell them there, but there's always the website [link]
Just remember to be careful with you money, okay?

Dragons have magical ballons in them that help them fly no need for big wings
Random I know =_= I really love this though! Where did you get your promarkers?

Magical balloons sure would come in handy sometimes D: Certainly for these two buggers, wouldn't want them to crash :/
I collect promarkers from everywhere I stumble upon them ^^ I buy some every now and then from the local art supply shop, but I hoard them whenever I get the chance to go see my family in Germany, because they are cheaper in the German art stores Also, when I visit a city and I see them being sold in a store, I usually buy one as a souvenir ^^ They're being sold at quite a lot of art supply stores, really. And they're cheaper than Copic markers.

I saw a documentary on dragons and they said that they have air sacks in them to help with flying because the wings are small in comparison to the dragon the air is the sacks heats up when they fly helpig it along, I cant remember the name of it though anywho
Im thinking of buying the entire set or promarkers online

The entire set? I hope you won't mind me giving my opinion, but I don't think that's a very good idea :/ I browsed through your gallery and saw a lot of digital art and of the traditional art that was in there, none was made with markers.
Buying an entire set of markers is really expensive and I wouldn't recommend it to people who have never used them before, because you'll never know if you are good in handling them or like to work with them at all. Also, when starting out, you don't need every single color in existence. You can just start with a smaller pack and practice and then when you are used to the material, you can try to broaden your set of colors.
That's really just my humble opinion, you can buy them anyway, if you want. But lately I've seen a lot of artists who bought a whole bunch of markers just because they're trendy and regretted that decision very much later on.

I see what you are saying but i actually do do a lot of traditional, I have sketchbooks filled, I just don't have a scanner so I never post any traditional, But I have done marker (I have some prismacolor markers), Colored pencil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, graphite, charcol. . Its kind of an ocd thing of mine to, I need to have the entire set because then I freak out thinking "what if I dont have the right color blah blah" I was hoping to get some smaller sets before I try the bigger ones. Im trying to stop doing that because I spend tons of money on art supplies... though I do wind up using and loving what I buy and ive made my art stuff last quite a long while to Sorry I am rambling now v_v
thank you for you Opinion if I may ask, what are some good base colors to get? because I do all sorts of this, animals, people, landscape, cityscape etc (I also don't post a lot to DA because its not "DA" worthy in my mind)

Hmm, for a nice basic set of markers, you have to look at what you like to draw most. With promarkers, it's fairly easy to choose, because they have basic tones for almost every hue:
- For every marker artist, the skin tones are a must have. I'd recommend these to anyone, and they come in a standard 5-pack, which is handy because then you won't have to pick them out by hand [link] Also the cool grey tones are VERY handy and come in a pack [link]
- Here comes the specializing. I browsed a bit through your work and saw you draw animals and nature-y things most. For this purpose, I'd recommend starting out with a warm set of colors. Don't bother with the pre-picked 5- or 12-packs for this, you have to pick your favorite colors by hand. In the packs, the colors usually range from a cold color extreme to a bright color extreme and you'll end up having colors that are not compatible with each other if you buy these first.
Go to the single promarker list [link] and put together a basic set. I advice starting with around 10 markers plus the skin tones mentioned earlier. Try picking colors that could be seen together in one drawing without looking bizarre. So don't pick Berry red, Cyan and Canary, try to go with more subtle tones.
A good basic set of warm colors could be:
- Terracotta
- Henna
- Tan (Gotta stock up on your brown tones, they prove to be very handy in creating natural looking pictures)
- Apricot
- Tulip yellow
- Buttercup
- Leaf green
- Lush green
- Denim blue
- Cocktail pink
I'm more of a sketch and creature-concept artist, so I like to go for pastel-like colors and earthy green and brown tones. If you color a lot of manga, maybe you'd like to go with a few brighter markers, like Magenta, but I wouldn't recommend it for beginners, because these colors are quite strong and disturb the balance and composition of a drawing when applied incorrectly.
When advancing a bit after some time and noticing that your skills surpass your tools, you can expand your collection with shades to the colors of the basic set you already put together (This is actually pretty important. Don't buy completely different colors, but try to stick to your already obtained hues and make them flourish more with additions) Try buying light shades of blue and purple for shading the greens and browns of the previously mentioned set, for example, instead of a burning kind of aubergine.
With a basic set like this, you can create decent art and collect more markers over time. I started out with five markers ( X) ) and I have now collected up to 62 different colors. It took me a few years, but that didn't matter, because I didn't need all the colors to create art ^^ And whenever I lacked a color I desperately wanted, I rode my bike to the store and bought one. When you buy one every now and then, instead of spending a fortune all at once, you're sure to have all the colors you need and lack all the colors you don't need and you'll build up your own personal stack of colors just fine without wasting money ^^
(I just put a quick set together here that could serve a lot of purposes. It will do fine for landscapes, animals and people, it's an average set of the colors I find most beautiful and is varied in color, yet compatible. That doesn't mean you have to stick to this, of course X) Summarized, this set would entail:
5 skin tones
5 grey tones
3 types of brown
1 type of orange
2 types of yellow
2 types of green
1 blue and 1 pink (mostly for shading the previously mentioned colors))
WOO WALL OF TEXT I HOPE IT WAS USEFUL

What about the skin accents pack? I went with the list you referd me to, and I really like the colors (ive seen swatches) And think they would work nicely, I also added 2 purples to the set because I like purple, and another blue. im going to get the 5 skin tones, and cool grey's and just wanted to know about the skin accents

Mystalia In reply to Cat-nipp [2011-03-29 17:36:44 +0000 UTC]
Personally, I wouldn't buy that pack just yet. With this basic set, you've got most of the colors that are needed in order to color skin. Wait for your markers to arrive first and test them out, see if these colors work for you. I think the ones you got from my list will suffice for you to color skin. When your skill with markers increases and you really, really miss this colorpack in your arsenal of already obtained markers, you could always buy them later.
I'd avoid buying large quantities of markers at once, because you never know if the color will work out for you and you might end up not using it at all. The skin accents pack covers a lot of the ground that the Skin tones pack already does, it varies only a little bit. For beginning or novice marker artists, I wouldn't recommend having a lot of the same skin hues in your collecting, just the first pack will be fine.
Adding purples and blues to the list is fine, of course, if you like blue ^^ But be aware that blue and purple are very strong colors, be careful when putting them on a drawing, because markercolors are very, very bright. Just wanted to warn you ^^
Good luck! I'm always happy to help

That was actually what I had in mind when drawing these two little critters ^^ Baby birds DO learn to fly in spring, after all. Except that I totally failed with the wings X) The wings of the dragon sitting in the branch are not nearly large enough to lift it off the ground and the wings of the one flying are way too high up on his shoulders. But hey, who cares X) It looks decent enough if one doesn't think too hard about anatomy-trivia.
They actually fit the valentine-theme well, now that I look at it. Might print them on some cards and give them to some friends.

Heheh. Given that you are working with a mythological beastie, I think it's all right if their wings aren't big enough in reality to get them off the ground .
That would be really nice of you! I'm sure they would love such a card on valentines day.
