Description I was deeply touched by the pope's death. Even though I am not religious, and definitely not catholic, I feel like the world lost a very good man. Since there aren't a lot of very good men, in positions of power, that is a loss deeply felt indeed.

I may not have agreed with all the things the pope thought were important, and some of his decisions were in my mind unwise, however he was still a very humble, and loving man who didn't allow the power of his position turn him to evil deeds. Similar to Frodo and the One Ring, he was able to keep from being corrupted by the power he held. He went out of his way to bring people of different faiths together, and although he held very strict levels of morals, he never seemed to condemn those who did not hold up to them. That's rare in anyone, but as a head of one of the largest religions on earth, it's even more rare in my opinion.

So not only have I been deeply grieved to see him pass on, I was also astounded to see so many on this planet also grieve so deeply for him. People of all faiths and countries of origin.

So I created a weeping willow tree, who is holding a rosary to signify the pope's passing. It was incredibly important for me to express my feelings on the past week's events.

He is sculpted from polymer clay and apoxie sculpt, and has african jade gemstone leaves.

This is a beautiful and creatively realized tribute. I love the expression on the face of the tree, and the way its hands handle the rosary.

For some reason, even though I agree and understand your seriousness, I can't help but wonder what John Paul II would think, knowing he was being compared to Frodo.

An excellent 'grief' piece. You said you sell your pieces via auction. What would you say is the average you make from selling one of your babies?

Oh um, average is hard to say, but I have had some bring in as much as $430 and some bring in as little as $75 as far as actual art dolls go. Some of the other miscellaneous things I have sold have gone for less, but of course take much less time to make. I would say average would be about $200.

Couldn't help but laugh at John Paul's reaction to being compared to Frodo. It would have been interesting!

i think i'll take this as a different type of mourning. it touches me because my neighbor cut down almost all of his trees, including three very large ones and sent me into an eco-rage mode. (one was a weeping willow.)

It's definitely up for interpretation. I even made him so someone could replace the rosary with anything that meant something to them. His hands could hold just about anything.

I love weeping willows mainly because I grew up with a lot of them in my yard. I just didn't like them when I got into trouble and my mother beat the crap out of me with one of the branches. lol

We got hit by a hurricane a couple years back and it damaged or destroyed 40% of the trees in out county. In the months afterward, just about everyone with a yard full of trees had them all cut down. It was a storm worst than any we have had in recorded history, and we aren't likely to see another direct hit like that again, but people panicked. Blooming idiots..
