POSITIVE:

Determined > From her work to her recovery, Fern can be very determined in what she does. While she can feel hopeless and want to give up, she often refuses to, knowing that the best work will come from continuing on.

Kind > Fern, while not being the most empathetic, knows how to be kind and how to respect others. She knows how to make other dragons have a better day, even when she herself is having a hard one

Learner > Fern loves to learn new things, and it is one of the few interests she has that she still feels okay working with. She likes to write research essays and talk about the new things she has discovered, if only with close friends.

NEUTRAL:

Realistic > Fern has a grasp on where her limits lie, and where the limits of the world lie. While this means she doesn't often try and aim too high, this also means she won't often try things that she thinks may be too much for her to handle.

Logical Fern likes to think things though and works more on thoughts rather than emotions. However, this can backfire when she needs to make a sudden decision, as she doesn't have time to think things over and can get stuck trying to decide how to handle it without a plan.

NEGATIVE:

Pessimistic > Fern has always been rather pessimistic, though the attack on Hornet Hive has since pushed this forward. She tends to see the worst in things, tending to believe things are too good to be true often.

Hard Headed > Fern, once very weak willed and subject to peer pressure, has since become stubborn and only does things on her terms. She doesn't like being told what to do in a situation where she believes she knows better.

Shameful > Fern feels a lot of guilt, and tends to start feeling bad about even the tiniest mistakes she has made very quickly. While she has always felt like this, recently, much of her guilt has been about the attack on Hornet Hive.

LIKES >>  Writing, research, flowers, trees, rain

DISLIKES >> Crowds, absolute silence, sappy love novels, the Hives

SECRETS:

 > She has a collection of letters from Beewolf that she has kept, but not read, since the day Beewolf was killed
She doesn't like the way Clearsight is worshiped as if she were some goddess

FEARS:

 > Another attack on the Hives
 > Losing her wings
 > Beewolf, in whatever afterlife there is, blaming her
 > The concept of death. Not dying itself, but things like skeletons and graveyards and such tend to send Fern down her darker thoughts about Beewolf and the SilkWing attack on Hornet Hive.

WISHES/DREAMS:

 > She wishes to recover, at least to the point where she can cope better than she is now
 > To have a good life on Mezzo
 > To publish her guide

Pre-hatching >
Bamboo was a minor LeafWing noble through the rest of his family, unrelated to any part of Queen Bonsai's family but having a high status in the LeafWing kingdom. A very popular researcher and journalist, Bamboo met Fir, a scholar (originally a lawyer) who had taken interest in Bamboo's work. They met about twenty years before they got married, with Bamboo and Fir at first sending letters to each other as pen pals. It was Fir who suggested meeting up more often, and after ten years of being very close friends, the two ended up dating. After another decade, they ended up getting married, and soon after the two traveled to Mezzo to use the animus touched egg- they were careful on the trip back, and returned with two eggs.

Baby Dragonet > Fern hatched after her brother, Poplar, during a nice summer day. She was the smaller of the two siblings, though is often teased by being called the loudest, and from the start her fathers loved her unconditionally. She was a loud, cheerful bundle of scales and love, and for the first few years of her life, she lived in decent luxury. She loved learning from the start thanks to Fir, while her brother seemed to enjoy the more creative side of things. Fern was a relatively well liked child in her little area, though due to how much she worked, she didn't have any super close friends. Around this time as well, Fern began to learn of her minor abilities to speak to plants, though the only one that always responded to her was her brother's bonsai tree, who she helped grow with her brother and Fir. From the very start Fern loved flying, which would end up being a major thing in her life until she reached the age of seven. She was always a very active dragonet, and her fathers made sure that she learned how to quickly and easily move between trees alongside her strong flight.

Dragonet > When Fern turned four, her family moved to Hornet Hive to be closer to Fir's sister and her HiveWing husband, two dragons both Fir and Bamboo were very close to. Fir's sister's husband was also a research partner to Bamboo, and the latter was getting tired of constantly flying back and forth from their old home to the Hives, and vice versa. Fern began attending a local school in the Hive, and it was there that she met her closest friend, Beewolf. Beewolf was a stubborn, rebellious, "act before you think" sort of HiveWing, and initially, Fern had no wish to be near the HiveWing. For several years, however, they often chose each other to work with during projects and to hang around each other. Beewolf got Fern outside of the house more, and Fern helped tutor Beewolf. Over time their friendship grew and grew, the two becoming nearly inseparable. Despite the fact that neither of them admitted it often, the two really did care for each other. It was Beewolf who asked Fern out on their first date when they were six, but it was Fern who kept the train going. During these years, Fern also continued training with her Leafspeak. While she was no Sundew with her powers, she was decently good at influencing plants to grow quicker, though she was still rather annoyed that many plants refused to be helpful when she asked them questions. She learned to move quickly through the hives, now they they were in a more populated area, and Beewolf took it upon herself to teach Fern the best ways to get around the busier parts of the hive- namely, flying. As well as this, Beewolf had to help Fern keep alert to avoid hitting other dragons, and she learned how to use her eyes and her ears to see when someone was nearby, so she didn't slam into them.

Young Adult The start of Fern's adult life and graduation from the school she and Beewolf attended was rather cheerful. While the two weren't living together, Fern managed to get her own home in Hornet Hive, and often found herself at any nearby library or book store. She wrote drafts for a guide on growing certain kinds of trees and plants for bonsai purposes (in part thanks to her brother) and she and Beewolf were often out and about Hornet Hive, speaking about future plans or recent job opportunities.
However, about midway through the year, the well known, horrific attack on Hornet Hive occured, when Beewolf and Fern were out and speaking. Fern had never been a part of a massive attack before, and in the confusion, she was shoved into a thicker group of dragons and separated from Beewolf, a move that she suspects was done to protect her.
Fern doesn't remember much of the attack, a symptom of the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that developed after it. All she knew was that it was horrific, and Beewolf had been killed by the SilkWings that orchastrated it. While Fern knew it was normal to feel afraid after the attack, her fear, plus the following nightmares, anxiety attacks, sudden alertness and other symptoms that had popped up, had persisted for well beyond four months after the attack, and had started to become debilitating. It was Fir who helped her see a therapist, who she saw for five and a half years after the attack on Hornet Hive. She had lost interest in many of her past activities, and while she still practiced her Leafspeak, she rarely used it outside of that.
Recently, after some discussions with her parents about Mezzo, alongside finding a collegue of her current therapist on the island that was still in the practice and very well liked, Fern decided to leave Hornet Hive and Pantala as a whole. Her fathers often told stories about how lovely Mezzo was, and how quiet it could be. Especially after the strange events that transpired the summer before on Pantala, for once, Fern wanted something to change. She left at the start of spring, taking along a new bonsai tree from her brother, the draft of her research that she hadn't touched since Beewolf's death, the names of her two cousins that lived on Mezzo, enough money to get a life started, and a new armband from Fir as a parting gift.

Since arriving on Mezzo, Fern has started working at Scriptwriter's Book Store, and shares a home with her coworker and friend, Dina- though, Dina's recent admission into the University leaves the house mostly to Fern during the year.

PARENTS >
     >> Bamboo (Father)- The more strict of Fern's two fathers. He is the one who lays out the rules the most, though always puts his family first, and would give his wings to keep Fir and their dragonets safe.
     >> Fir (Father)- The fun loving, adventurous spirit of the duo. A scholar by trade, Fir was the one who trained Fern with her Leafspeak, being a Leafspeaker himself. He sometimes has to be reined in by Bamboo, though was always the source of fun for Fern and her brother.

SIBLINGS > Poplar (Hatchmate)- Despite finding him annoying and loud, Fern respects the work Poplar puts in for his bonsais and his craft, and has a gift Bonsai Tree from him she affectionately calls 'Queenie.'

MATE (if applicable) > None

DRAGONETS (if applicable) > None

------------------------------

Beewolf (Late girlfriend) > Fern's first love, and the one she lost during the attack on Hornet Hive. The worst part of it all is she doesn't remember what Beewolf did, other than she believes Beewolf shoved her to safety to save her. She misses her daily, and hasn't read the letters from her that she's kept stored.

Mandrake (Cousin) > A relative Fern only knew by name, Mandrake has been the more warm of the two brothers on Mezzo, and often gives Fern tips for her Bonsai tree and how to keep it neat and happy. As much as she appreciates it, she's not overly affectionate toward her cousin.

Sumac (Cousin) > The meaner of the two brothers, Sumac has less respect for Fern, though Mandrake makes sure he doesn't cross the line when they visit. Dina also makes sure things don't get too hectic when they're around.

Ghostwood (Friend) > One of Fern's closest friends, Ghost is someone she likes to have around, the upbeat LeafWing quite a nice fresh of breath air compared to her cosuins.

Dina (Friend) > Fern's first friend on Mezzo and her coworker

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is an anxiety disorder that develops after experiencing a traumatic event. While it is normal to feel trauma after an event, PTSD is much more severe, with the symptoms causing significant problems in the life of someone affected by it, from relationships to every day life. Symptoms of PTSD tend to show up within one-three months of the traumatic event, but it can take many more months, or even years, for symptoms to begin. These symptoms are grouped as- Avoidance Symptoms, Re-experiencing symptoms, arousal and reactivity symptoms, and cognition and mood symptoms. Avoidance symptoms cause a person affected by PTSD to avoid anything that may trigger memories of the event, to the point where some may even change their personal routines, which can lead to detachment from friends and family. Re-experiencing symptoms are related to reliving the event, such as flashbacks, nightmares, and thoughts- these can also cause physical reactions, such as increased heart rate and sweating. Arousal and reactivity symptoms are constant and aren't usually triggered, such as being easily startled, constantly being on guard, insomnia, and angry outbursts. Finally, cognition and mood symptoms are thoughts and feelings related to the event, and can alienate someone from others.

Fern specifically suffers from anxiety attacks when thinking about the attack on Hornet Hive, being in an enclosed space where she cannot find a route of escape, and being in a situation where she isn't sure what's happening. Fern suffers from nightmares and has trouble sleeping most nights, though through her treatment with her therapist, she is starting to see some improvement in her sleep. She can't remember the events of the attack well, and after the attack, lost interest in many of the things she loved doing, like gardening and flying. She is constantly on guard, knowing exactly how to get out of most areas should a situation occur. She is startled easily, even with how observant she is. Oftentimes, she blames herself for being too naive or too carefree as to why Beewolf died.

Symptom list-
Anxiety attacks
Re-experiencing: Nightmares, flashbacks
Avoidance: Avoids thoughts of Hornet Hive (even good ones), avoids loud, confusing events.
Arousal/Reactivity: Easily startled, sleeping difficulties (lessened through recent treatment)
Cognition/Mood: Cannot remember much of the traumatic event, constantly on guard, feels intense blame

Fern is currently working alongside a therapist to recover- PTSD recovery can take as little as six months, but for some, it is a chronic condition.
