Description Go To Blood Splatter Tutorial, Part 2
The finished painting that was used for the examples:
The Blood I Shed For You...

Part 1 of a two part tutorial on how to use my new blood splatter technique. This part is the easy part with no painting required and mostly relies on splatter brushes, adjustment layers, and blending modes. Pretty simple, more or less. The second part will have more painting in it. Can you get by with just part 1 and ignore part 2 entirely? Certainly, it just won't look quite as snazzy.
Fair sized file. If anyone has severe issues with downloading, please mention it. I'll shrink it down some more.

To the best of my knowledge, this only works in Photoshop. I have not tested it in any other program, but if you have the ability to use something similar to a 'Blending Mode' then give it a shot!

And let it rain blood!

for some reason none of the brushes are working for me... they're taking me BACK to the devART homepage... help?

Crap. From what I can tell, dA changed the coding for link addresses. I'm not entirely sure how to fix that without finding all the original brushes and relinking (which might take awhile, I don't know if the brushes are even still available on here).

What I can suggest for the moment (until I work this out) is to search for both blood brushed and splatter brushes on dA. There are an awful lot of them on here. Browse, find which ones you like, play around with them. This tutorial is a little old at this point, so most of the brushes I linked before are, equally, a little dated. You might be able to find something better than the ones I used for this tutorial.

Anyway, regardless of the brushes you use, so long as they don't inherently have texture/value to them, the techniques in the tutorial should work just as well with them.

I've been combing through Tutorials for AGES on a good blood splatter smear tutorial... and I have to say... this is the single most educational, fun and well explained one EVER! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH FOR THIS! <3

Mytherea In reply to FiretruckCherie [2011-05-12 14:37:19 +0000 UTC]

That's exactly why I made this. I had been looking for a good tutorial too when I started painting blood and discovered, much to my displeasure, that there wasn't one good one out there, just tutorials on blood sprays. So I made this to fill in that horrible hole in the deviantART tutorial resource.
Why, thank you very much! I try to make my tutorials both informative and entertaining. I hate having to read dry and dull tutorials that don't make me laugh a little. And you're most certainly welcome!

Nice tutorial. It's also worth noting that you can select areas of blood and use the 'warp' tool (under edit) to change the angle and shape of the blood splashes to better match the curvature of his anatomy.

An excellent point. I haven't used it before for that, but it'd work nicely. (I have difficulty controlling the transform tools, other than Free, and stuff ends up looking...weird, so I avoid using it) Thanks for the suggestion! I'll put a note up on the Arist's Comments.

I used to feel the same way, but now warp and perspective tool are my best friends, along with the liquify tool.

Mytherea In reply to RIPZyden070121 [2010-11-09 19:30:57 +0000 UTC]

Liquify does not like running on my Photoshop (PS spazzes and tends to freeze up and die when I use it, or any filter really, so I have to find other ways to accomplish it). I do like using warp for fixing photographs that aren't straight or adjusting speech bubbles so they're not totally round.

You never know when you need to make something gory, though this'd also work well if your subject is covered in paint, tar, or any other thick liquid. Just change the colour around.

I had been too, which was why I made this. There really ISN'T a good blood splatter tutorial out there, so I felt it had to be made.
Part 2 will hopefully be up very soon, which will have painting actual blood and blood drips and such and help make it look more realistic.
And you're welcome!

Where'd you get the blood brushes? Just off DA?

Yep, they're just splatter brushes. I think I used [link] [link] [link] [link] and [link] all in different combination and such. There are an absolute TON of blood and splatter brushes on dA.

looking interesting thusfar! It is always interesting trying to play with things to make them look like they're ON a person instead of just floating over them

And quite difficult. Throughout the making of part 2, it's been mostly an experience in experimentation, as I've never gone quite as far as I am with painting the blood in there.
And thanks!
