Actually, most flamers and trolls aren't angry.
They're trying to make you angry for a little humor at your expense, and depending on if the flamer has a brain or not (and you'd be sorely disappointed to know that actually most do), they actually have a reason to flame someone. Sure it's malicious, and mean, and all that junk - but this is the internet. They've already grown the thicker skin; once he (or she) is banned, they either make a new account or they move on to another website. But...
Depending on if you're one of the (lucky?) unlucky ones, they'll pull even more attention to the situation by taking screenshots and notes of all of your responses - even ignoring is a kind of response, and it's actually not taken to very kindly.
Anyways, before this turns into anymore of a tl;dr, what I'd like to say is: As much as I'd love to totally agree with your deviation, it just sounds like one of the generic "BEWARE OF _____ ON THE INTERNET" reports online that I've seen for way too many years. If we were living in some happy la-la land (or on the internet ten years ago), then sure, ignoring a flamer would always make him go away. The disgusting truth is nowadays and depending on who flames you, you're branded for life.

That is so true.
So far I've had only one flamer, and that was on The Lion King Fan-Art Archive a few years ago. Obviously he/she didn't have much imagination, seeing as how I had drawn a lioness with a mermaid tail and the flamer kept saying it was un-natural and such. 
Luckily, I haven't yet had any flamers here on dA.

I must say, as a every-one and a while Troll/Flamer.. This isn't true XD I usually flame idiots, and those who deserve it by being utter bitches/assholes/ and/or any other type of.. Disliked person :3 I make sure they have a loooong sheet of misconduct before I annoy them into leaving. And I learned that.. They will try to ignore you. But jab in the right spot, and the floodgates are released.
