Chapter Seventeen
Falcon's legs flew over the ground, stirring up a trail of dust.  Today, she felt lighter and more free than usual.  The air was brisk, the morning light in the trees was beautiful, and the world was full of potential.
She had barely broken a sweat when she made it to the Fairgrounds.  Falcon was mildly surprised.  The track was surrounded by ponies already.
Of course, this wasn't an audience.  There were ponies setting up seating around the track, food stands, games for younger ponies, and picnic tables for older ones.  Falcon had all but forgotten that after the competition, the rest of the town would be enjoying a small fair.  She thought to herself that she should ask Chakra to go see it with her.
Falcon happily trotted over to the track where she could see Arden being fitted into a harness along with another large and muscular stallion.  They were getting ready to pull a pair of comb-like plows over the track to smooth out the surface for tomorrow.
"Morning Falcon," Arden said as his friend approached, "I'm sorry but we can't have you running on the track while we work."
"Yeah, I get it," she said, leaning over the rail.  "Do you think there's anything I could do to help set up?"
"Honestly, you should just take it easy today.  You don't want to over-prepare..."
"Okay, okay, don't worry about me," she said, cutting off the stallion with a jovial wave of the hoof.
Falcon decided to trot through the fairgrounds.  Just because she couldn't exert herself didn't mean she couldn't look around.
As she explored the activities being assembled for tomorrow, she stumbled upon the site where Chakra's tent had been.  The sign was still planted in the ground, "Reserved for Chakra Gem.  Until Sunday."
"Oh, right," she thought to herself, "I guess we can't really explore the fair together.  She'll want to work while the crowd is here.  Falcon looked down at the earth where the tent stakes had been.  This was where she had first met the little blue unicorn.  The travelling fraud... seemed so different from the pony she'd been getting to know over the past week.
Falcon started trotting back to her home, mulling over everything.  She focused mainly on how much of Chakra's behavior, when they first met, had been an act.  She wasn't really a show-off, she didn't like crowds, she didn't constantly act like she knew what was going to happen either.  When she wasn't playing the part of a fortune-teller, the real Chakra Gem was actually quiet, cautious, and meek.  She inhaled her food, and when she was tired, just passed out wherever she was and slept there.  Plus... Falcon thought back to the night before.  She had looked so sultry, when she had stepped up to Falcon with her wet mane and smoldering eyes.  But also, she didn't think Chakra had been aware of it, but she had been blushing heavily and trembling.
Vulnerable.  That was the word.  She had seen the way that Chakra conducted herself in public, but around Falcon she allowed herself to be... vulnerable.
Falcon couldn't help but feel a little honored at the trust that the little unicorn had placed in her.
By then, she had reached her home, and when she opened the door she could still smell this morning's pancakes.  She glanced into the kitchen and noticed that the breakfast she had left for Chakra was still untouched.
"Odd," she thought, because she wasn't on the couch, so she must be awake.  Falcon checked the rest of her home but it was empty.  She walked outside and checked the shed.  The wagon was gone... so....
Falcon thought that she must have gone to the Fairgrounds to set up.  She must've just taken a different route.  So, she walked back into town, this time walking through the market stalls.
"Maybe she wanted to look for something," she thought as she scanned the crowd.  She didn't see Chakra, her cloak, or her wagon anywhere.
She made her way quickly back to the fairgrounds, but the sign was still in the ground, where she had left  it.  Falcon couldn't see any sign of Chakra here either.  She did, however, spot Trist, watching Arden plow the track.
Falcon cantered over to the brown pegasus.  "Hey, have you seen Chakra?"
"No... isn't she staying with you?"
"Yeah, but... I figured she'd want to set up for tomorrow, and I know she's got her wagon, but I can't seem to find her."
For a moment Trist's face held a peculiar expression, as if he wanted to say something that his friend wouldn't want to hear.  After a pause, he opened his wings with a small sigh.  "Okay, I'll help you look."

Trist circled the town far overhead, as Falcon cantered anxiously to the Inn, the restaurants, and the other local businesses.  Everywhere, she asked if anypony had seen the fortune-telling unicorn that day.  She received a unanimous, "no."
"Falcon!" she finally heard overhead.  She looked up to see Trist pointing, "she left town.  I think I see her down that-"
Falcon didn't wait to listen to the rest.  She barreled past the visiting ponies as her hooves flew over the ground and carried her away from Gallup.
