Chapter Eighteen
Chakra trotted down the lonely dirt road, keeping up a brisk pace. "Just get far away," she thought to herself, "I can deal with this situation only if I get away from it."
She kept her eyes closed often, to keep them from overflowing. It wasn't easy to walk away from everything in Gallup. She told herself that it should be. She had walked away from countless towns before. She HAD to leave. Things would ONLY work out if she left. That's the way it had been her whole life. Things were easier to deal with when she was just a visitor. She couldn't be pulled into anypony else's life... she didn't belong there.
Her rumination was interrupted by the sound of galloping hooves.
"Oh no... please no..." was all she could think.
Chakra Gem stopped pulling her cart forward as Falcon caught up and planted herself in front of the unicorn.
Falcon panted slightly as she stood barring the way, "Chakra... what's going on?"
Chakra fixed her gaze on Falcon's shoulders, unable to look her in the eyes. "I was always going to leave town. You knew that."
"I... but, without saying anything?! You were just going to SNEAK away? I thought you were better than that!"
"I'm really not..." Chakra mumbled. Then she finally glanced at Falcon's face, and away again. "Besides, you're about to be some star athlete, moving on to bigger and better things. And I'll still be some loner-outcast-charlatan." "...who's not good enough to be around you," she added in her mind.
A shocked expression froze on Falcon's face as she tried to collect the words there were rushing through her mind. "You know... I feel kinda insulted that you would think so little of me."
The pair stood there, each waiting for the other to speak. Chakra thought about what it would be like if she went back with Falcon... Chakra didn't think she could be everything that the other mare wanted in a companion. She had already thought through this scenario enough times, she didn't need to go through it again. Eventually, Falcon would want to be with somepony that Chakra just COULDN'T be. Then she would leave, and Chakra would be too far in-over-her-head, and the pain...
"Just to be clear," Falcon said, "I honestly do care about you. And I THOUGHT you cared for me too.... I mean, if you didnt... then why.... Then what about last night? What was that to you?" Her golden eyes were starting to shimmer with moisture.
Chakra's gaze had fallen all the way to the ground. "I don't want to drag you down." She said this firmly and quietly, then stepped to the side, moving to pull her cart around the impeding mare.
Falcon let her pass, and after a moment, turned to walk alongside her. "Chakra, please, let's... let's just not do this. Come on, come back with me... we can talk about this, and things will work out fine, just trust me."
"No," Chakra stomped her hooves as she walked along, glaring at the ground. Her words suddenly came out in a rush. "I work so hard to be the pony that I am, and I'm not going to stop living the way I do and settle into your life, just so you can leave me when something better comes along."
Falcon was silent for a long moment. "You would honestly rather live on the road, than just trust me?"
Chakra didn't reply.
"You do realize that YOU'RE the one doing the leaving here, and yet blaming ME for it?"
Chakra's magic suddenly raised her hood, and a fragile voice arose from under the shadow of the grey fabric. "Aren't there enough other mares for you to obsess over?"
Falcon froze from the sting of that statement. She stood in the road and waited for the other pony to notice that she was unaccompanied and pause, or look over... or anything.
The cart didn't stop, and the pony pulling it didn't say anything as she trotted down the dirt road.
Falcon's eyes stung, her face felt hot, and her chest clenched as if it were physically holding in something wild. Her mind was swimming in a dark pool of turmoil, and she couldn't process what to do. She couldn't make the little blue unicorn listen... she was leaving. All Falcon could do was go back home.
She turned around, her sorrow swirling into feelings of malice, betrayal, loss... and injustice. She wanted to lay down and cry... but she also wanted to stomp and scream. What had she even done? What had she done to deserve being treated like that?!
Without thinking, she whipped her head around and screamed so the retreating pony couldn't avoid hearing what she had to say.
"YOU'RE THE ONE CAUSING ALL YOUR OWN DAMN PROBLEMS, YOU LYING FREAK!"
Hot tears were streaming down Falcon's face as she watched the cart pause on the road. For a moment, the tiniest bit of hope blossomed in her chest... then died a moment later. The cloaked pony and cart started moving again, retreating down the road.
Falcon couldn't shout again... and she couldn't go to her and apologize, not after that. The unicorn had caused this bad situation... but Falcon had just made it irreversible.
There was nothing else for her to do. She needed to be alone. She needed to be home. She faced her hometown and did the only thing she was good at.
She ran.
