Description You may ask me:
"Why did you draw it with three tongues? If you look at all reptiles today, and all pictures of reptiles in books and on the internet and in movies, none of them have more than one tongue. I've never even seen a dinosaur with three tongues before. T-rex only had one tongue. ONE TONGUE!!! >.<"And what's with all the elaborate spines? I can understand the scratches because this guy clearly got into a scrap. ...But the spines? If you go to a library and find a book with a T-Rex, I guarantee it won't look like this. Besides, why would T-Rex even need that sort of thing? Spines only appeared on herbivores as a means of protection to ward off predators because if a predator like T-Rex came and tried to take a bite out of it, it would get its mouth ****ed. Moreover, T-Rex wouldn't have had spines because it was the top dog 65 million years ago; no other dinosaur would have dared attack a 10m long meat-eater as vicious as it already was. That's why I simple can't understand why you put spines on T-Rex.
And I may reply:
"Why not?"

--

Anyway, this has been the first dinosaur I've drawn since primary school (around six years ago). Sure brings back memories.

Initially I wanted to draw velociraptor leaping at its prey. Too bad I couldn't find a good reference to draw from. Luckily, there was plenty more on T-Rex. I studied several pictures of its skull, and got inspiration for skin textures from looking at komodo dragon and elephant skin. Gave it a little twist while I was at it.

Spent about eight hours using 2H, HB and 6B on A3 paper. Still experimenting with different paper stump and kneaded eraser techniques.

Oh, and I also tried taking a well lit photograph of the drawing, and comparing it to the scan (thanks to a suggestion). And I believe the photograph actually looks better! Though the scan looks sharper, there's a threshold which prevents many of the lighter 2H tones (teeth and spines) from showing up. The photograph isn't as sharp, but the mid and light tones look much better and less grainy.

Thanks Jacob! Haha it's a bit exaggerated - now that I look at it, it's too short as well.

How are you making those dark shades? Β Charcoal or regular graphite?

I used no darker than 6B on this drawing however it may appear darker here because I adjusted the levels on Photoshop. I now use a Staedtler 8B in some of my work for the really black values.Β

okay-okay...let me get this straight....incredible artistic talent as well as edgy, comidical writing skills (yeah comidical!...I said it! look it up i dare ya! I guarantee you won't find it! made my spell checker go nuts!) let's see...what you did with the texture of this bad boys skin is freakin' mind blowing!...from it's battle scars to the folds....! who said that one tongue is better than three? the way i see it...you can multi-task with that sucker AND more taste buds! there's this homegirl from Russia that does amazing work with Dinos. you'll need to check her stuff out, it's crazy good like yours!

Haha Comidical...

As for tongues, there really isn't any evidence that 100% certifies that T-Rex only had o[ne tongue. And unlikes it may be. But yah, wouldn't it be better? >.<

As for the Russian artist, do you know what name she goes by?

Your basic drawing skills are strong as usual good sir as is your attention to detail. Perhaps my only suggestion would be a few more dark areas. I think I need to go ahead and spend some time really hammering my life drawing again.
