Description
Thought it was time to give portraits another shot. Who better than IU to be my next subject? Reference here: [link]Took about 20 hours using 6H, HB and 6B pencils on A4. The hair took a lot longer than Yuri, obviously because it was far more complicated and I really wanted it to look like *hair*. Other than that, the general complexion of her face was rather difficult to pull off because it's meant to be smooth looking and with very few blemishes. It's a common misconception to think older, more wrinkly people are harder to draw than young people, but it's the other way round. After critical review of this drawing on my own behalf, I noticed the toning on her face is off in certain places (e.g. her left cheek) so I still need more practice.
Anyway, I did really enjoy drawing a decent portrait again. Now, back to the usual evil stuff then. XD

The hair may look complicated, but it's quite straightforward. You just need to pay extra attention to values and create the right texture. Keep in mind: what colour, how reflective, how tidy it is.

Beautiful. I am glad you got such a gift from God. It is obvious that you do all the details. What is remarkable is that you're at it spent 20 hours. I hope that one day I draw so well, because we can see that you have a lot Do you pay attention. I write over Chrome so please excuse me if you do not understand. [link] Thank You for Inspiration ... Very much

20 hours paid off! This portrait is BEAUTIFUL!!! Yes, her hair is the show stopper. I can understand the complexity. I tend to draw hair fast because I get lost in the intricate pattern of the hair strands and shading. Just amazing!

Well, I normally start with the eyes, nose and mouth, working outwards with complexion and lastly the hair. But, if it works for you, go for it.

Yeah, that's a good way to start. I do too. I don't start on the hair details until a lot is done because it can get messy & you get tired quicker too. The face is so important because of proportions and likeness, then the hair which is like icing on the cake... though hair takes just as long as the face sometimes.

Thank you! I usually do the hair last (after the face), but nonetheless, I simply work from left to right. When you're drawing hair, it's important to pay attention to the values (you can squint your eyes so you can look at the overall tones - are any places too dark or too light?), colour, reflection and texture.
