Description aka. Taeyeon Kim from SNSD

Chose this picture because personally, I thought she looked exceptionally good here. And thank goodness for HD music videos!!! Normally I'd never draw from a screenshot. Reference: [link]
I know there are a few differences here and there (eyebrows too small, and the hair) but it's as good as I can do given I didn't trace.

Took surprisingly less time than my previous portraits - only about 6 hours. And it was using my primative technique with only 2H, 2B and 6B pencils on paper, with smudging done with tissue paper.

Again, my crap scanner screwed stuff up, and upping the contrast/brightness on PS seems to have made her eyes look smaller...

Lots of fun, this picture. At least it didn't feel nearly as tedious as drawing the others. *maybe I'm getting better?* >.<

Thanks a lot Donna!

As with most subject matter (when tackling realism), it's important to nail the overall values and form/movement. i.e. Priority is to be able to recognise the subject at a glance from a thumbnail, even if it means simply blocking down a single flat value. Then, we put in detail, which is the most gruelling part of drawing hair - there's thousands upon thousands of hairs - and yes it's a lot of work. Usually, I again try get the overall values of each area first and punch in hard individual strands in areas of emphasis. Definitely do all your strokes in the direction of the hair to add to the movement. Ensure your point is sharp when bringing out a couple individual hairs and final touches towards the end. This here is one of my earliest portraits, perhaps what I've just said is clearer in my more recent stuff.

Sorry if that's a bit much to read, though of course there's plenty more I could cover and I'm obviously not the best teacher. Neither is this the only way to draw hair; some people literally draw like a printer (this guy:Β nimra.deviantart.com/art/Gabri… . However, for any beginner, definitely start big and from the more important areas. Don't get carried away with detail early on and never lose overall vision.

Do you often draw from references or do you prefer to just 'make stuff up'?

This is such an awesome drawing! Where is it that you are studying from? University or just a tutor?

Thanks Anon! I normally collect anywhere from a few to loads of reference material depending on what I'm drawing. This here was drawn solely from one screenshot from a music video. Elsewhere when I'm applying more creativity, I may draw inspiration or integrate part of many different sources - which is often more fun.

I currently am a first year Game Art student at Media Design School, though this sort of traditional work is mostly derived from classes outside of school or practice on my own.

This looks awesome! Taeyeon is very beautiful in this music video. I think I was going to draw this picture as well, until I saw yours HAHAHA. But I really have to agree with you on the HD music videos. Thank god for them. I wouldn't have gotten a good Taeyeon, Tiffany, or Seohyun pic if it weren't for HD. Keep up the great work.

Heh, imagine how it's like when I see stuff that completely blows myself away.

Tutorial? I don't know. I'm sure there are plenty of videos out there on youtube. I only decided to draw Taeyeon after my friend challenged me after seeing [link] Although my method is a lot more primitive than the guy in the video, I followed the same steps and did it almost exactly in the same way. The eyes, to me, are actually the easiest to draw; just need to get the shape right and make them dark enough. As for the hair, it's a lot more complicated. Take a look at this vid, I hope it helps.

She looks better than in photo I would like to create so realistic portraits and btw I can tell you that the copies don't have to be exactly as the reference (,,the artist never makes the perfect copy" - said one of characters from a film who used to copy The Lady with an ermine )

Looks good to me. Trace??? Why bother it looks good and it represents not only your skill but also your own take on the image. Perhaps these diferences make the image more appealing to the eye, ie it actually makes the individual represented look more asthetically appealing than what they do in reality. It has something to do with human perception of beauty all elements of the face balance making the individual more attractive to ourselves. Nice work.
