Description
I really need to get a better scanner... The one I have at home makes stuff too bright and clarity isn't great. This is the best I can enhance it on PS, though you can see the lack of quality up close. As for this drawing. It was a request by my friend Richard to do a portrait of the incredible Im Yoon Ah from SNSD. The face itself took around three or four hours, but the hair... When I got up to doing it, I was like: "Oh great. Let's colour in! ...All in black..."
I'm also going to have to get some better paper to draw portraits on. The Bockingford 110 gsm is simply too rough and textured to create a truly smooth finish. If you look closely, many parts are quite grainy. I'll try get my hands on some drawing board or board paper for my future portraits. Also need to get an 8B pencil!!!
This was the first drawing I've done using tortillons (paper stumps) for the smudging. I'm finding them far easier to control than tissue paper to say the least. Along with the kneaded eraser and Rotring mechanical pencil, I reckon I've stepped up the performance a bit.
Took about 8 hours with 2H, HB and 6B on A4.

Could it get any better than that? I don't think so..
Well, at least by using a camera and taking a picture of this beauty ;D

Thanks again! You'll be surprised how insanely fine the pencil can draw. I'm still far from the best.

I love it
Can you share me your process in making the hair? I really need to improve my hair drawing skills specially black hair is my weakness.

Hey Yurihan! Thanks for asking; It's been a while since I've drawn hair realistically. It's important to note how the direction of movement throughout the hair and to draw your lines smoothly together. Imagine if each stroke of the pencil was a strand of hair, how would it unfurl?

You did a great job with the hair, it always gives me a pain, especially with the eraser...

110 gsm cartridge for this. Nothing special really. I use Bristol Board these days.

Most excellent work!!!
...just for info, Taking pictures of your work with two lights, one on each side, yields in my opinion better results than scanners. Also there is a pencil called a Prismacolor Ebony #14420 that can get quite dark as well.
Have Fun, the look and feel is remarkable!

Thanks for the suggestions! I might try it. As for the dark pencil, I'll see if I can get my hands on it. Though, it may also be an indication to start trying charcoal.

Just takes a little patience. The hair took just as long as the face.

amazing! I have seen a lot of work whre the skin is light, or white and the hair very dark lately. & it makes it look so much more realistic. Or is it because of that? Anyways grat work!

I don't know about more realistic, but the contrast does make it look more like a drawing than a photograph. Whether people like it is up to them.
Thanks though!

I really like it! Also compared with originals the skin can almost never be that light so it's made on purpose! It does save time to doesn't it?

LOL You're so right. Kristal looks just like Yoona too. -_- Crazy, and she's supposed to be Jessica's sister. XD

Great work! She looks beautiful. I also feel your pain with scanners. It's so hard to replicate what it looks like IRL. -sigh-

Very nice work.. I love the work you did on the hair (In my eyes hair is the hardest part to get right) The lips are so right on! As for the paper stumps I'm using the Derwent Blender pencil... You may also want to give that a try (Just a thought.)
I give it Three thumbs up because I only have two hands.

Wow, thank you so much! I might ask my art teacher about blending pencils. At this point, paper stumps seem to do the trick. Only real issue is to get better paper to draw on.

Great work as usual with Yoona~ I think this must be one of the Yoona pictures used for their SMTown files or something if I didn't recall wrongly....
Could do with a little more shading around the cheeks; she looks a bit whitish-ly plump. But again it could be the quality of scanner, something which I have problems with too.

Thanks mate! I'm not too sure where this picture was from, as it was my friend who found and suggested it to me.
As for the cheeks, I agree with you, they are a bit too blank. I did smudge over them on the actual drawing, but the scanner doesn't seem to have picked them up...
