Description
Nobody said it was easyNo one ever said it would be this hard
[EDIT] This is Chris Martin from Coldplay, for those of you who didn't recognise him. I should've included that earlier, but I guess this is what you get when you upload your drawings in the middle of the night.
Gift for my boyfriend, who really likes Coldplay.
This took me like forever to finish. I think I've had this lying around ever since November or something.
This time it's a real shame the scanner ate some shading, as I (think I) managed to get pretty neat skin tones here. As usual, I tried to get them back but failed.
Also, I got to use my awesome coloured pencils again. I don't have the guts yet to try a full-colour drawing, but I certainly do enjoy squeezing some colour in here and there. But as my coloured pencil-collection is steadily growing I think I really have to try a full-colour drawing soon. I blame my silly friends from foreign countries.
Anyway, I hope you like it! I know I enjoyed drawing him, even though it took me forever.
Done with:
× Canson Bristol paper (224 g/m²)
× .3 mm & .5 mm mechanical pencils
× 2B to 6B pencils
× Derwent Inktense coloured pencils
× Faber Castell coloured pencils
× (Kneaded) eraser & eraser pencil

I recognized this man straight away when I saw the miniature Cookie for me!
Scanners are always craving for some shading, stupid bastards Anyway, the drawing looks very nice. Blue really suit Chris. You did a really good job on the clothing [look at those buttons on his jacket, pefectly unsharp
] and Chris' hair. Well done! Did your boyfriend like it?
It would be great to see your drawing 100% done in coloured pencils

Yay, cookie for you!
Thanks for noticing the buttons, haha! I spent more time on them than I should have, and I'm still not completely satisfied. So it's great to hear you like them! Thanks a lot!
Yup he liked it! It's framed and on his desk now.
I'm gonna try a coloured pencil drawing soon (I hope)! I just gotta find the right ref, and lots of courage.

So tasty, thanks!
I do, but it's sad you're not satisfied with them... However I can relate to you - not many artists like their artworks in 100%. All in all, it means you want to improve skills and draw better, so it's a piece of good news!
Great! The satisfaction of a person who gets the gift is priceless ^^
Sounds interesting, good luck with searching and creating a drawing, I'm looking forward to see it Any ideas? Will it be a portrait of a person, an animal, landscape or sth else?

Sometimes I even really hate a drawing after I'm done with it, and then turn out to be loving it some time later. Maybe it's because I spend too much time with it before it's finished so I'm just tired of seeing it. Ironically enough, those really old drawings I hated back then are now even a bit precious to be. I'm a bit like "Sure, you're ugly, BUT I DON'T CARE, I LOVE YOU."
I have never really given any of my drawings to anyone (to *SheldonSands once but that was over the mail so I wasn't there to see her reaction ), so this was a new experience to me too.
I've got a ref now for a coloured pencils drawing, and I've started already but the details of a certain part are driving me crazy at the moment. So I'm just ignoring it for now. Today I spent all day answering comments and commenting on art on dA, so at least I really feel like drawing now. I hope I can hold on to that feeling!

Same here with the oldest ones! But I hate that feeling when I have a picture of my unfinished drawing being finished - I mean I imagine how it will look like once it's done - and then it ends up being completely different
That sucks and makes me dissatisfied with my work. It happens way too often.
Hah she should have taken a picture of her face when she got the delivery That would be precious!
"Today I spent all day answering comments and commenting on art on dA, so at least I really feel like drawing now." - it's both adorable and funny what you've written
Can't wait to see this done! How is it so far?

I know! Sometimes you don't really screw something up, but still things don't turn out the way you'd wanted them to.
Browsing dA usually makes me want to draw, either that or it makes me feel stupid because of all the awesome stuff other people make.
I'm still ignoring it. I just have to get past the stupid details, until then I'm stuck I'm afraid.

Exactly... and then I'm like Same feeling?
You know what? I'm starting to considering you're able to read my thoughts Because it also happens to me! When I browse dA, I see a lot of beautiful drawings and I think "oooooh that's nice, I wish I could draw like this, I feel like drawing now... so much!" or wonderful photographs and then I'm like "weeee I have to draw it C:". Then I end up with thousand different pictures saved on my PC, however I always pick the celebrity photo found on Google... I'm pathetic

Yup, same feeling.
I certainly know that feeling. I sometimes go on ref hunting sprees, but I don't think I've ever used a ref in my to-draw folder. Usually I'm just watching tv or a movie and think "I want to draw that!" And then I search for that scene, the right picture, print it and start drawing it.

I love the blue colour additions in this one, makes this piece of artwork more interesting
Nice portrait, nevertheless I think you could have spent some more time on the shadings, especially his hand looks quite flat.

Thanks!
I agree with you on his hand, yeah. It does look flat, even in real life where the scanner did not eat some subtle shading.

I like the use of colour on his eyes, especially as it draws attention to his expression - which looks is clear and expressive - but colouring in his sleeve unbalances the drawing a little, I think? I also think the drawing is a touch too long, with the jacket and shirt on the bottom taking away some more of the balance, as it makes the drawing feel more 'weighted'; perhaps a landscape orientation could have worked?
There's still a good level of shading, despite the scanner's efforts to ruin it, so the original drawing must look pretty damn awesome!
Uhhyeah. Kind of out of practice with commenting on dA, so apologies if I sound a tad blunt. I've been told I speak harshly.

N0rks In reply to 0Hamster0 [2011-05-28 11:32:04 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! I actually like the coloured sleeve. I think it would've become too b&w with too little emphasis on the blue eyes if I hadn't made it blue (but yeah, I was a little unsure too before I started it
).
I agree it's a little 'empty' with all the shirt and jacket there though, but this was all there is on the ref. So landscape wouldn't have worked as I'm afraid of making things up when it comes to drawings like these.
Pff, the original is way better in this case. There are no white spots at all (especially on his face). I was finally happy with a new kind of/level of shading I'd achieved and then scanner goes and eats it. I think it's because of the white background, but then again, there are people on dA who almost always have white backgrounds without their scanner eating shading. Dispute between me and scanner remains unsettled.
Are all your harsh comments incorporated okay this way, sir? Nah just kidding.

You know, it really shows that you've used Bristol, it differs a lot from the drawings you've done on more textured stuff. Love the touch of blue and his expression. I'm sure he liked the drawing.
Yay for silly friends from foreign countries!

I know! The shading looks so much smoother! The only downside is that my scanner seems to eat even more shading from Bristol than from the textured papers I've got. I've shaded his skin here darker than I usually do, but still half of it is gone (also due to the white background). But I figured people weren't waiting for another scanner rant in my artists' comments, so I'm just giving it to you here.
Anyway, thank you! He really did like it; I didn't get much reaction at first when I gave it to him.
Yay for those friends! Which reminds me I still need to test those Onyxes you gave me (and Prismacolors Hamster gave me
).

Oh, but the scanner rants are part of our life, we can't just ignore the frustration boiling inside us. I just had a major row with my scanner this weekend. -_- I'm not talking to Guido until he apologises for ruining my drawing.
Dude. Prismacolors are h e a v e n l y. I did some random colour exercises with the ones that Hamster sent and since I was blown away by how vibrant and soft they are, I thought, what the hell, and fulfilled the dream I've had for 2 years. I got the 72 set from eBay. Worth every penny. *strokes the tin in a perverted manner*

Ugh, I know the feeling. I'm ignoring both scanners in this house at the moment. I want to change all settings on both of them, but my dad doesn't let me because he wants that big contrast difference to scan his documents of whatever.
So I am told, yeah. That is actually one of the reasons I haven't tried them yet.
I also haven't found the perfect ref for them, because I want the perfect-perfect ref as they're supposed to be so awesome.
This can only end really bad.

Ohh! Here's a tip: try to find a blender pencil, this way you'll use less pigment. You have to press pretty hard to get the colour looking even without a blender, but if you have it, then it'll cover up the white spots beautifully.
Ref-wise, I think everything colourful will do, just tweak the levels and draw.
