I never just drag the color wheel to a darker shade when I color. Instead I use combinations of colors like this for a bright and vivid look.
uhh awful handwriting, I know :,D
*edit However shading the other way can give a more dramatic or serious feel to it.

I'm not that good with explaining either, but people say that explaining things with pictures is easier than explaining with text, so since it's a chart, I don't think you'll have to explain all that much. o u o;

Very nice! Using a different color in a darker shade gives a lighting that is still colorful but more dramatic <:

lol very true,I usually never stick with the colors I originally put down, I mess around with the contrast and brightness and hue a lot until I like how it looks x>

I've stopped shading with black for a while.
It's tough to tell people what you mean without showing it to them simply, so it's cool to see a simple explanation of how the heck this works out there lol

I think when youre coloring your art gradually making it darker makes it look better instead of just having it one dark color, makes it look more alive ^_^
